I work in the construction industry and it is common to employ or allow archeologists access on site (it is written into the Contract). They are usually allowed complete access to an area of interest for a given period which maybe extended if significant finds are made. More frequently experienced is a watching brief when the archeologists witness the careful stripping of topsoil etc If finds are discovered and the Contact is delayed the Contractor in most cases can claim(the Client should have insurance) The majority of buried treasure I'm afraid to say still goes into the pockets of workmen.A pot of Roman coins discovered were as good as currency in a pub local to a particular site. I've also picked up a few artifacts myself when on site varying between fossils and some nice limehouse pottery. I keep my eyes open for some nice hammered gold....one day

Probably more in the US where they buy the slab rather than the coin. It looks nice but appears to have a few problems on the obverse...Market price 60 to 70% of book price for UNC? BTW a popular coin in most UK collections....up there with the Cartwheels.

Predecimal seems a good cut off. Decimal is only going to get bigger (you've already managed 84 pages) With CCGB2008 or 2009? Including George 111 would seem a good idea but I think you would need a big section on copper and the forgeries/evasions of the time as numistically they were vey important. The silver is a very short series...Gold...not too bad....but please picture a few of the Victorian "spade" brass gaming tokens. Pre George 111 is far more specialised and as a specialist collector I would prefer higher quality hard back reference books/price guides. Cost really doesn't come into the equation (well I would pay more than £4.95)

I've just checked 20 1990's and they were all rounded. So if the square exist chances are they will be fairly rare.

The brass tokens were mass produced in Victorian times as gaming tokens and advertising tokens (even Sainsburys got in the act) They were thrown to theatre goers. They are becoming collectable...but I bought a batch for a few pence each a while back. Watch the suckers on Ebay think they are bidding on a Guinea

Six monarchs !!! and Nik you will find the early Georges far more expensive. You can collect some nice George V & VI pieces for pocket money prices and then add a George 1 or 11 as funds allow. You will also need somewhere to store/keep them.

A genuine pre 1816 6d will weigh 3g and have a 21mm dia. Post 1816 of this type will weigh 2.8g and have a 19mm dia. I believe you have a forgery. ps Gold of the above sizes will nearly be twice as heavy.

I went for a while without resubscibing but for the sake of £30 odd over the year what the heck. I do keep them and often refer back to read articles as my hobby takes different avenues. I've currently got a 1979 Coin the independant one magazine at hand (I bought about 100 ranging from the mid 60's to the early 80's under different titles...monthly ,news etc) These are proving an excellent read with surveys and varieties seemingly popular. In this particular edition it has an artical on the currency of Louis XVI a series that I've tinkered with but now going to hit hard.

It has a very "post brasso" appearance. Uncleaned copper/bronze is just not that colour. Even the hint of lustre on the reverse (with the finger print) convinces me of cleaning...probably 20+ years ago. This is my opinion only and I stand to be corrected. Can you explain to me why the F17 appears to be cleaned to you? I appreciate any wisdom I can gather on the subject. Muygrandeoso

It would appear the 1860 has also been cleaned and is re toning with a finger print et al . NVF would also be generous. Cleaning in real terms reduces both coins to less than Fine prices....but Buns are widely collected and everything above a silloette can be shifted.

They could always get it slabbed by a "prone to errors" US grading company....

At Coinpeople I've noted that people want to break out slabs so they can get a coin upgraded. I find this whole subject albeit financially rewarding JUST NOT BRITISH. It smacks of complete hype....My MS63 is better than yours etc. If you can't grade,appreciate and value a coin you are no collector.

The one you want is described by Davis as 1c (2503). this is 2nd A of Gratia to space. His book was printed 25 years ago and he valued this type at £9 in Unc against 25p for the common issue. Happy hunting.
