1/2ds still work in the 2p fruit machines...I know that for a fact. I don't use my calm sea 57's mind.

If I can't keep it at home I don't want to collect it. If I was to INVEST in some biggies a discreet safe would suffice. However, coins are my Hobby and will remain just that.

I sneeked loads of these out of Kenya after my Honeymoon in 1990. I think at the time they were less than 10p in exchange terms.

I wouldn't get too exited on the values. There are 240 1ds to the £ so £10 worth = 2,400nr You could spend the rest of yor life trying to sell them on Ebay but they are only worth a few pence each. Like wise a £5 bag of 1/2ds will contain 2,400 coins the value again minimal. There will be 80 3ds in a £ bag again worth just a few pence each. You will obviously flood the market with the quantities you have (limited demand I suspect) From memory I think you will find 1967 is the most common date for all three denominations. I believe pre 1992 2p's are worth 3p in copper (a 1/2d is about the same size) so a £5 bag could be worth 2,400 x 3p = £72 in scrap. Or you could approach a dealer. The 2/6's and circulated coins are likely to be low value but if you've got the inclination get a coin book out of the library and check for any rare dates or varieties, I hope this helps.

A nicely nibbled coin. I wonder where the line was drawn when a coin would be accepted or not. Apparrently in the 18C the Scots loved the copper evasions.

Check the feedback out. 2 bare knuckle fight videos and 2 rather suspect knives. Chav central it would seem.

I've never seen them before and I believe I'm quite familar with UK coins. However I'm sure there are specialists out there...Good luck. Ps...its the sort of thing that gets 99p on Ebay or really takes off.

At coinpeople.com they have been doing this coin grading challenge...but mainly on US coins...there have been some interesting results. I would be very interested in pre 1800 copper as recently I observed very similar coins on "well known" respected dealers tables varied considerably in price. This must be down to the grade attributed.

I went to the Midland Fair today and picked up from Mr Bennet a Copy of Englands Stiking History (one of Chris's)...looks a good read....he was also selling CC2007. From what I saw at the fair the market and hobby is booming...I went in search of Hammered Gold but couldn't believe the prices..and how busy it was and the sight of £50 notes . I must of done 3 circuits before I eventually found (under a pile of tat) a good tray of pre 1860 1/4d's at bargain prices (not a copper dealer obviously ) and so I bought 3 upgrades. My quest for hammered gold will continue. Whilst I wouldn't want (or couldn't afford) to visit a fair every month.It does serve a reality check on ones collecting ambitions and hopes/aspirations.... A great day out. Oh...and I did buy a bit of gold...not hammered though

There are no hard and fast rules as with US coins (ie all letters of LIBERTY clear etc.) If a coin is Unc it will have no wear. The fingers around the trident are a high point which tend to wear first.(as do Britannias cheeks..on her face!!!) Minor bag knocks and you can still call Unc technically...anything less and A/Unc or GEF may apply. It is worth remembering GVF should show only minor wear and when I buy from trusted dealers this is what I expect and usually get. I try not to generalise but the majority of grading on Ebay is way too generous (F coins described as EF by one particular dealer) Try this site for a reasonable grading guide with a few pictures... The only other ones I know of for British coins are approx 2 pages and a few pictures in coin yearbooks.

Sylvester At your age it must be difficult...(I'm only 20 years older) Decent company schemes will soon disappear or are disappearing. Look after nr 1 because future goverments can't afford to or won't look after you. Maybe I'm greedy but look after yourself and distribute charity as you seem fit.

I will warn everyone on this forum that pensions will become the biggest scandal/ripoff of the 21st Century. Only the Final Salary schemes are worth considering but I note pension funds are requiring more and more contributions. Equity schemes...forget it....buy quality furniture ,coins,gold,art. At present I have about £100k tied up in equity pensions which at present lets me access 25% tax free at retirement...the balance will give me less than £100 a week. I won't be investing anymore in a pension.

I've done the date run thing with 1/4ds and then realised I will NEVER achieve a complete collection...ref Peck Colin Cooke etc. I now tend to lurch into an area and concentrate....and learn. Recently I've dipped the toe into French silver and hammered,some nice George 11 milled silver and random pieces. Coin Collecting to me is now more than a fad...I want it to be my pension...although the selling bit is going to prove a heartache. Hammered gold...now there is something.

On a full flan with a nice strike it would be collectable....trouble is London mints are common and coming out of the ground (via detectorists) faster than the numistmatic market can handle...a bargain for your grandchildren no doubt.

Does anyone know of the release date? Was it available at Coinex? Thanks
