If as suggested there could be 200,000 of these in circulation I would expect the price will drop to between £20 to £40 as similar to the 1950 & 51 1d which had mintatages of 120,000 & 240,000. There are plenty of mugs out there.

They sometimes appear on Ebay. In some of the latter lists Colin detailed some of the series brilliantly. I also suggest the Coin Mags of yesteryear at least had good specialist write ups (if Mr Mussell reads or hears of this)

I would hasten to add.....Why are there so few 1946 or 1949 in Unc about......rare as hens teeth.

I've picked up a few 26 ME's and even my 2 daughters have examples in their 1d runs. It would seem that the advent of decimalisation brought such a hunt out for the rarer dates/varieties that these were stashed away in vast numbers and probably exist in greater nrs than mintages would otherwise indicate. I've got more 1946 3ds than you could shake a stick at (thanks to my grandfathers)

Hi Chris The coin you are showing is what we would classify as poor condition and worth a few pence at most. Condition is the key. The modern coins would really have to be as they left the mint.

I'm going to pull a big dividend out of my Company Account as this is earning me 0.2%. I spoke to my accountant and he couldn't advise any safe places (cash ISA only 0.9% and limited investment)....so Coin Fair here I come (past the Porsche Garage...I would love a Cayman). Gold...its a bit late & quality copper is so rare so hammered / milled silver looks on the cards. I'm usually very careful with money but what is happening to people who have looked after their finances is worrying....so I'm hedging a few bets of my own and making this money disappear from the taxmans radar....and also intend to enjoy it.

It is almost impossible to consistantly grade hammered coins. I consider them to be poor, OK or nice. The grade of a hammered will depend on the flan shape , central striking , depth of strike, flan clipping etc There are also differences down to quality of silver ie a EF Henry V111 in debased silver will not match a lesser grade Fine silver issue Edward V1. Even with Ed 1 pennies the early issues are not as asthetically nice. Before the advent of the internet and glossy dealer catalogues I used to buy hammered on the strength of the dealers grades. Quite a few of these were returned. I now only buy on the strength of good pictures or in hand inspection.

Make sure the frame is mahogany or at a push rosewood. Pine,oak etc are too resinous and not suitable for coins.

Pre 1947 approx 7 x face & would imagine pre 1920 12/14 x face.....if you are lucky. Ebay is easy but beware of postage costs.

Hi Sye The rare 1937 3d is Edward V111. Regarding cleaning I would advise against it. Your 1919 silver 3d is 92.5% silver but alas is very common. Regards Peter

Marty It would appear you have nothing rare....but as Red has said condition is important. If the coins appear circulated then a couple of £'s at best (you can shift these for 99p on Ebay). If they are uncirculated they will be worth considerably more. Post a couple of pictures of the better ones and we can advise you further. Regards Peter
