Hi James There are several dates in early copper which are far rarer than catalogues indicate (and a few overvalued dates too) Quality is always better at holding its value so concentrate on buying the best. For investment buy well rounded,centred, quality silver hammered coins.They seem to be popular and always sell for a premium over book price whether on dealers lists,ebay,coin fairs or auction. Gold....can you guess where it is going next....history has shown it to peak and trough....where are we now?

The minimal weight loss will not be lost on a bag of 50p's....only really a problem with gold. I have been banking loose copper change and as long as it reaches 359 to 360g no problem.

Just checked out mine its a Martlet (quack).I got it on a whim....a type collector.I just went for a half decent bust which are like hens teeth. Not one for my selling pot at present. I will post a picture later as it could maybe raise a few £ to pursue farthings or a 50 inch TV.

Hi Your 2d is in fact a 1d and in NF condition....value maybe £5 to £12. All 3 coins appear to have been cleaned...which lowers their values. Regards Peter

I've been selling (and have loads more) H's & KN's ....they fetch pence in low grades....but hey they must be shifted (Mrs Peter's orders before I seek out a few farthing rarities and Pre 1100 hammered)

Who did you buy it from? There are a few vendors on ebay currently selling casts but not advertising their status. 10% underweight is a likely weight for pewter (lead/tin alloy). Pure tin would be about 30% down, pure lead 20% over - both are ish numbers. I've noticed her auctions which people are falling for...I won't name and shame as Nigel wants his refund but if you see a George 11 shilling being described as a medieval hammered coin AVOID...some of the actual hammered are duping a lot of experienced Ebayers

I agree, I also have the Edward VII 1902 crown with less toning and I think it looks a little bland in comparison. 1902 Crowns are quite rare....however crowns are not my first choice (they get a bit expensive before 1887)and between 1927-34....and a few varieties.Personally I prefer your 1902......but each to their own.

I wouldn't touch the dummies book. Learn from this forum and the Net. Peckchris suggestion on CYB is true but if you want to specialise try Michael Freemans or Pecks efforts on copper/bronze and maybe Davis for silver. I will also state that Rotographic books that Chris turns out are excellent....they cover valuation, varieties, grading history and are all competitivly priced. Is there anything specific series you are interested in? Regards Peter

I've got a Nikon D40 which although not current has a cult status. I just use auto focus with the standard lens supplied (18-55)....my surplus coins are selling like hot cakes I'm going to re-photograph all my coins (my daughter will as she has less camera shake ) I know some people go to great lengths to obtain quality pictures....life is too short. This was knocked off in about 20 secs on the window cill on a piece of red felt.

Peckris, I have a HP Photosmart C7180 printer/scanner and have touble with the finished scans, they just dont look right compared to other peoples scanned coins. Any recommendations for settings and/or software for amending the images etc? Ditto - cheap Canon scanner; at least 6 years old. I scan a dozen or so at a time at 600dpi but don't ask the scanner to do an A4 scan - just a postcard sized part of the platen. It can do 1200dpi, but then that's one coin at a time. Sometimes they're a bit dull, particularly with older bronze, and I find a brightness tweak of about 10% and 5% contrast brings out detail you'd otherwise lose in the gloom. I use a Nikon DSLR and get brilliant results with out a tripod and using natural light.
