  1. A nice coin, Matt! It's definitely one of Blencoe's, I would recognise that finger and background anywhere. I would definitely suggest you get Withers' The Pennies of Edward I and II. It's a book that runs right from the basics through to the detailed subclassing. You can read more about it here.
  2. Looks more like a Celtic bronze unit to me. There are types of Eppilus with that eagle motif.
  3. Daniel, Yes, a couple of mms isn't anything to be too concerned about. Clive.
  4. Keep us updated if you would, I'm intrigued.
  5. Fair enough. Taking into account the later addition of the rings, maybe 1890-1930?
  6. Bowls/dishes with coins in are pretty common and don't often fetch much as the coin is inevitably harshly cleaned or polished. Whilst I have never seen one with a copy of a seal in the 19th and 20th century electrotype copies are often found in auctions and at fairs. For an impression to be put into the dish like this is most probably a decorative feature and taking into account the fact it's impressed and not attached/joined to the bowl, along with the rings I would suggest this is mid-20th century. An interesting piece. Something you'd probably find on the beams in an old bar in Bruges.
  7. Depending on its diameter it's a Bohemond VII 'Cross & Castle' Crusader Groat which is about 26/27mm. The legend around the castle reads CIVITAS TRIPOLIS SVRIE which is Trabli, now in Lebanon. The obverse, around the cross, reads +SEPTIMIVS BOEMVNDVS COMES. Circa 1278. Whether it's genuine or not is a different question. The 'silver' looks a little suspect from the images, it is hard to tell.
  8. The number refers to the listing in Spink's annual price & information book seen here. If you are looking to buy a copy why not shop around on eBay, Amazon and dealers or consider getting an older version as they can be much cheaper.
  9. Blencoe always seems to attract top-whack and I'm not sure why... Even if they are described accurately.
  10. "Not sure if the piercing has gone all of the way through, I haven't tried it yet" ??????? Edit: oh I see, it's been drilled from both sides but the craftsman couldn't align the holes!
  11. Anyone want a shatter? The joy of phonetic spelling. Here's the link.
  12. This incredibly rare coin... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HENRY-III-VOIDED-LONG-CROSS-VERY-RARE-MIS-STRUCK-/350857855016?pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&hash=item51b0c20028
  13. A very warm welcome to you, William!
  14. My thoughts, too. So many of these 8s are listed as overdates on eBay - perhaps the SCBC should note them in their next issue to clear up some confusion.
  15. He seems to specialise in bullion nowadays with his price list for the likes of "silver hammered pennies" seemingly only applying to the most common issues.
  16. Very much so! I have bought a few things from him over the past few years.
  17. House clearances would be my guess.
  18. Because it was removed by eBay and not the seller.
  19. What is the item number for the Liz? I saw the Edward I groat.
  20. Ok. So EDWARDVS REX ANGLI on obverse and reverse CIVI TAS DVR EME - perhaps a crozier on the reverse, making it a pre-treaty penny, e.g. S.1595, but without the reverse crozier.
  21. Does the obverse not match, for example, Spink 1549. EDWR?
  22. It looks to be a 10cf - not a 10ab as they have a plain initial cross whereas this has the cross moline. It certainly looks genuine and, as Stuart says, these are rarely copied well.
  23. With import duty I can understand that a few tears have been shed.
  24. I'd agree! It looks like a 5b1, Winchester mint.
