  1. There were so many "counterfeit" and Continental copies around at the time, people tended to cut a small piece out to test if the coin was, indeed, silver. Then, of course, there were the chancers that made a living of paring small ammounts off each coin that came their way, to sell the silver. Nice society, eh?
  2. OK! All you ancient collectors out there (No! Not YOUR age). Here is the thing that has puzzled me for a long while. Despite the kngdom of Reged being a forc e in its day, there are no attributed coins to the area. Urien and Owain were major players but, while their contemporaries were minting coins, there seems to be non coming from this area. Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?
  3. I'd say Henry VI rosette-mascle issue of 1427-30 Mint of Callais. Spinks 1865. Value in my 2004 issue book is given as £30 in Fine. Your coin WAS VF but the missing parts will count severely against it.
  4. We need a picture to be of any use!
  5. Plenty of Rum ande coke and I didn't notice the temperature ( something like that)
  6. Thank you all! Would you believe, I'm going to my daughter's house to try out her new Hot Tub - the temperature here at the moment is 85 degrees! Mad or senile I can't figure out which!
  7. I've answered you on Coinpeople! I think Postumus and once silvered.!
  8. Move over Geoff, I think the trouble is that the whole thing is part of the celebrity cult and has nothing to do with sport>
  9. Excellent news. I look forward to its publication. It's one I'll add to my library!
  10. What's happening about the book we gave a preliminary proof read earlier? Hope it's still in the offing as I enjoyed the extract we saw!
  11. Can we honestly say that this issue includes Maundy money when it has not been issued to the 'poor' at the ceremony? The Majestic 2006 Royal Mint Silver Proof Coin Collection http://www.westminstercollection.com/entry....aspx?Id=maundy
  12. Hmm! My grandson has a metal detector, cheapy model, perhaps I'll 'play' with it sometime! Now where do I think those Celts lived around here!
  13. Cracking coin, you lucky devil! I've always fancied trying my hand at metal detecting, but lack of field sites and other distractions have prevented this. Offa coins are not numerous and much sought after by collectors. Out of my legue though. I don't have an up-to-date catalogue, but a trip to the local library to look at the latest Spink Coins of England would give you an idea. My2004 edition gives the value at £750 in fine, but things have moved on. I'd put your coin at Fine, mainly because of the pitting but this is subjective and I'm sure there are masses of people out there who will drool at the sight! Congratulations on your find!
  14. On top of the price, look at 'post & pack' price
  15. You should realise, of course, that if he joins the forum and reads this your days of 'penny' farthings will be over!
  16. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/hammered-silver-coin...1QQcmdZViewItem The ultimate?
  17. Still can't post descriptions/classifications of coins.?
  18. The hat is a relic of a Texan holiday! Ordinary pint would be welcome!
  19. Just checked my coins with no defect, but then they are proof. Perhaps it's only those in circulation. (you don't say which of the two types of Brunell £2's it is?)
  20. and here's me thinking this was a football-free zone. Ah! well, another refuge lost!
  21. and you didn't offer me a pint!
  22. Seems we are alone in the wilderness with a very shy lot!
  23. Cheers!
  24. Definitely a hard way to make a few bucks!
