There were so many "counterfeit" and Continental copies around at the time, people tended to cut a small piece out to test if the coin was, indeed, silver. Then, of course, there were the chancers that made a living of paring small ammounts off each coin that came their way, to sell the silver. Nice society, eh?

OK! All you ancient collectors out there (No! Not YOUR age). Here is the thing that has puzzled me for a long while. Despite the kngdom of Reged being a forc e in its day, there are no attributed coins to the area. Urien and Owain were major players but, while their contemporaries were minting coins, there seems to be non coming from this area. Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I'd say Henry VI rosette-mascle issue of 1427-30 Mint of Callais. Spinks 1865. Value in my 2004 issue book is given as £30 in Fine. Your coin WAS VF but the missing parts will count severely against it.

Cracking coin, you lucky devil! I've always fancied trying my hand at metal detecting, but lack of field sites and other distractions have prevented this. Offa coins are not numerous and much sought after by collectors. Out of my legue though. I don't have an up-to-date catalogue, but a trip to the local library to look at the latest Spink Coins of England would give you an idea. My2004 edition gives the value at £750 in fine, but things have moved on. I'd put your coin at Fine, mainly because of the pitting but this is subjective and I'm sure there are masses of people out there who will drool at the sight! Congratulations on your find!
