  1. OK my friends have resolved it. Alexander III first coinage penny , maybe class 7 .the legend is reversed Walter on Ber(wick) info.... Retrograde coins are those with inscriptions, often the reverse legend, that are written backward or mirrored, making the text read from right to left instead of left to right. This feature is considered an interesting numismatic rarity and is sometimes found on coins from various periods and regions, such as ancient Greece, medieval England, and Scotland. Retrograde" in this context likely refers to coins with the text appearing backwards or reversed on the reverse (or "tails") side of the coin. Alexander III, the King of Scots, reigned from 1249 to 1286 and his coinage, including sterling coins, featured various mints and styles. Some of these coins, particularly those from the Berwick mint, have legends (the inscription on the coin) that were printed in a retrograde style.

  2. hello, I'm not qualified however I did read recently about grease being in the die forcing metal out, ..... in your picture, along side the deformed 9 there looks like a residue of metal.... worth a thought...🤔

  3. I can see that it is Alexander III first coinage, probably class 2. (I am using the Coincraft 1999 catalogue and I beleive the classes may vary from other works.) I struggle to make sense of the reverse. My best guess would be Walter at Kinghorn - working on the premise that the 3 letters 6 to 9 o'clock are KIN.

  4. Short notice and apologies for this, but just to let people know that Kevin Clancy from the Royal Mint will be giving a talk on 'Art and Design in Coinage' to the society this evening in the upstairs function room at the Nursery Inn, 258 Green Ln, Stockport SK4 2NA starting at 8pm prompt (ask at the bar). If anybody is in the area and wants to attend, please feel free to come along and introduce yourself. You don't have to be a member to attend, though obviously could consider this for the future. As guest speakers do this of their own volition, it is important that talks are supported. Excellent beers available (Hydes)

  6. Hi, Picked this 1902 up today with an unusual (angular) 9, I've been looking through the posts and other sources for similar examples and can't find any, guessing it might be a common occurrence, can anyone advise? Thanks again

  8. That looks entirely possible. My book has such awful illustrations that I cannot even tell which way up the lettering should be! You need someone with access to a better reference book.

  10. Hi, Here is the obverse and reverse of 1861 Halfpenny along with the previously posted E over B. Bob kindly suggested I post it here for comparison purposes - I would have been a bit quicker but I've been side tracked reading some of the many informative halfpenny posts. There is so much that I couldn't find the E or F over B post history (which I know I've seen before!) - best therefore to tag it on the end. Halfpennies may be a bit less collectable than pennies - but the upside is of course (as everyone knows) that they are more affordable - or at least I've been finding them so ! I will try to identify some more from my trays and post any that I struggle with for feedback from the experts What does puzzle me though - given the immense variety in QV Bronze pennies and Halfpennies - I would expect a similar number of varieties with Farthings - possibly even more so, maybe I'm wrong but this doesn't seem to the the case. I guess fewer were produced and possibly the dies needed fewer repairs Best Regards !

  12. I have got a reply back from eBay and they said that they "didn't find the listing to be in violation of our policy". What a joke! But they will take notice once they have got more reports.

  14. Certainly it could be either, I don’t think the photos are definitive. A little but of gunge removal and closer images would help. Jerry

  16. I gave up reporting clear fakes several years ago. Total waste of my time. They ignored every single one.
