What goes round comes round. This one was brought to me today at the market as a gift from a chap I had helped assess his collection of modern silver crowns. (He couldn't work out which were silver and which were not.) Anyway, a pretty nice 1908 Penny - I believe 2+D, F166 so not scarce but nice as a freebie!
Quite amazing!! This guy's other non-numismatic MD finds are all strangely similar....

Not a very subtle forger!
I've reported each individually and await with baited breath to see if Ebay have the gumption to pull them.
It's a really nice one and not one I've seen before, I do collect the odd counter marked coin but not seriously. If anybody has a copy of 'British Countermarks on Copper and Bronze Coins' by J G Scott they maybe able to give you some more info
Received my second letter today from Border force to confirm a refund which like the other will be paid to me in the next couple of weeks ☺️
Just wish i had known what to do before.
Important to keep the envelope and receipt from the purchase if you think its wrong.
A lot of 1887 proofs have a slightly purple hue, but all coins tone differently depending how they have been stored. Most proofs can be identified by the reflective fields, well defined rims and edge and sharply defined edge milling.
If you can post a decent picture, you'll get an answer.
