pokal02 Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Anyone have any luck here? I had a total disaster - most coins were being passed or going for low/mid-estimate, but the two I marked as 'must-haves' went for 4.5 and 4 times estimate - on one I wasn't even the underbidder. Worse still, had I known I wasn't spending, I could have got a decent Coelnoth 1d which was unsold at £800. Oh well, there's always Slaney 2....! Quote
azda Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I did watch feom the begining and a smile came across my face as lots were going unslod. I was interested in 2 lots, the first was just a little too much for me just now, the 2nd i was surprised at, lot 153 estimate of £150-£200 which at £200 was Spinks guide for the grade, straight off the bat £400, my jaw dropped Quote
jaggy Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I looked at the catalogue and decided there was nothing there of interest to me. Quote
Rob Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I was interested in the EdC PACX penny ex Lockett, but not for £2K all in. The only other thing would have been a Milton shilling, but I'm a bit skint for that at the moment. Quote
pokal02 Posted May 5, 2015 Author Posted May 5, 2015 One of mine was lot 101 Henry VI Bristol groat, AVF, chipped, I thought it would go for 550-600 (est 300-400) It went for about £1,300 I think. I never even got in a bid - there were always people clicking before me!! I'd have given up anyway at 800-850 though. Quote
TomGoodheart Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Out of curiosity, anyone note what Lot 145 went for? Charles I (1625-1649), Silver “Fine Work” Shilling? . Quote
Rob Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Out of curiosity, anyone note what Lot 145 went for? Charles I (1625-1649), Silver “Fine Work” Shilling?.Hammered at 4200. Over 5K is too much for a fine work shilling. Pattern I could accept and more, but a fine work shilling isn't the rarest thing on this planet. The sale is still up on the Saleroom as it is today and tomorrow. Look at the bidding page rather than the online catalogue. Quote
TomGoodheart Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Thanks Rob. Silly money IMHO. Odd about the legend error on a (presumably) specially prepared die though! . Quote
Rob Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Thanks Rob. Silly money IMHO. Odd about the legend error on a (presumably) specially prepared die though!.My thoughts exactly. What's the point of a fine work piece if all the legend is a literary mess? Must have been cut by an engraver called Stanley...........Maybe they were apprentices' test pieces? Just a thought. Quote
Rob Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Bloody internet.Midland Fair is my place to be.Then go.I've had a table there every month for a couple years now but never met you. Mothers' Day this Sunday - so treat her to a coin fair visit. After all, it's the thought that counts. Quote

Must pay more attention to the world outside. Just wondering where I saw it. Obviously there is some residual conscience hidden away somewhere. Quote

Nordle11 Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I miss the Midland In fact, I miss any coin fair that sells something from England.. Quote
VickySilver Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I popped for the 1865 half penny which was a decent specimen! Quote
Peter Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 I do the Midland about 4x per year. Kids too old to take to the hotel(plus they avoid losing their social life) Last time we left them at home there were drugs and complaints from neighbours. Dog and two cats take preference for Mrs Peter so it is sad 250 mile round trip. I have several favourite dealers next time I will search out forum members. Quote
