I don't agree with the EF grading by the seller, but I'm hoping I got a decent deal. There are some supersized images on the eBay link.

You've paid top money it would be worthless to a dealer(apart from ebay).

Coin is an attractive VF at the best - i think you might have paid £15 or £20 too much but it ain't a lot really .

You might just get your money back if you keep the coin for ten years or so.

It does look cleaned to me, it has that 'kind of surface' in the lit field, but you'll know when you get it in-hand! Get some images up as soon as you can!

If i were you, i'd take ebay up on their "promise gaurantee" its never EF and the price also suggests the same. To put it harshly, its mediocre at best unfortunately. If you've already paid for it, wait till it arrives and ask for a refund as "not as described" and save your money a little for a better example

As well as being cleaned, I think the reason there are no edge knocks is because they have been removed. If you look carefully, the coin appears to have chamfered edges. The chamfers are very even in shape and tone. Also the description 'EX details' sounds remarkably similar to the TPG description 'XF details', which denotes a coin that they have declined to fully grade due to a 'problem' (eg. major scratching, cleaning etc.)

Thanks people, I thought it was a bit iffy from the outset as it was private bidding. What does chamfered relate to? As in someone has re added copper to the rim?

No, it looks like they've actually shaved the edge off at an angle! I can't relate to the images at this point, but if you look at the edge lettering, you can see the angles of the rim run uniformly alongside it!

Getting the transaction reversed would be an extremely top move! Let us know how you get on!

If it was just a case of wear, I'd say you got more than a decent deal - it's certainly better than VF. Unfortunately I have to agree with the others about the possible cleaning and chamfering, which would make it a coin to avoid.

Why even start the buying process if you think this?

I don't think it helps anyone that an item is mis-described and I don't like people that rip others off, but if you thought it was wrong and still proceeded, it is very difficult to have sympathy if and when it does go wrong. If in doubt, leave it out & move on.

There were 500 tons of these things made. I suspect you might find another example within 30 seconds.

Indeed. I think ebay is like anywhere else. You need to know your subject and sometimes do a bit of research. But it is probably the largest marketplace in the world so I wouldn't rule it out, even though I don't rely on it to the extent I used to.

As for selling .. well I've a coin up right now. Where else can you list an item in seconds, sit back and see if anyone is interested from the comfort of home. And the cost? Less than the price of a 2nd class stamp.
