Accumulator Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 What do you make of the toning on this coin? I just can't get over the feeling it's totally artificial, but otherwise a lovely penny. Quote

Peckris Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 Me no like. The colours aren't AWFUL, just a tad unnatural. What I really dislike is the artificial reflectiveness off Vicky's hair. Quote
azda Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 If you read his ebay text he says " Wörthy of a PREMIUM bid" so now you know why the americans dip them in petrol/Paraffin or whatever.Wonder what the long term effects of this practise is plus sitting behind a slab. Quote
VickySilver Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 A year or so ago I sent this seller a note of concern about his offerings, and he claimed that "he buys them toned that way" and knew not how they got that appearance - artificially toned (AT). Not quite sure how true that is.... Quote
RLC35 Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Vicky, I think the guy's ebay screenname gives him away..."GreatToning".....I don't usually like toned coins, but this one is attractive, but like Azda said...for how long! Quote
Gary Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 give me an evenly toned milk chocolate colour any time!I cannot imagine a coin toning naturally in that way. Quote
VickySilver Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 You know, an interesting thought is that the very slabs themselves may develop markets for this type of toning and not for the expected reasons IMO: when you go a coin show in the USA, there are tables and tables (sometimes multiple hundreds of tables) and each is replete with stacks of slabs, all appearing uniform and very boring whether they contain an 100k USD bit or a 25 USD bit. So just perhaps, wild toning AT or not may break a bit of the monotony...I absolutely am not excusing it, and am not in favour of it, just musing the point. Quote
numismatist Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Most of his coins are what he calls " Rainbow Toned " His 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is $2000.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!They normal sell for silver scrap price but he has thousandsof sales so the USA must be full of mugs ! Quote
TomGoodheart Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Oh, I don't know. Perhaps I could be persuaded. Not bad eh? Now, where did I throw those slabs? Quote
numismatist Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I tried goggle "Fake rainbow toned coins" quite an eye openerE-How even tells you how to cook your Morgan Dollars in the oven.More seriously I now keep seeing incredible toned coins in the toplondon auctions..See photos of these 1746 proofs. They fetchedworld record prices . Are these " fake " tones ? ALL the 1746Proofs I've seen in the past had dull tones. Quote

Accumulator Posted June 6, 2012 Author Posted June 6, 2012 Oh, I don't know. Perhaps I could be persuaded. Not bad eh? Now, where did I throw those slabs? That's outrageous! I didn't think to look at his other items. Funny how they're nearly all 'toned' in the same way. He's wrecking some lovely coins in my opinion. Quote
numismatist Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Heres another...Seems to be some in just about EVERY sale now Quote
Coppers Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 If any of you ever frequent US coin forums you'll very quickly see that a number of collectors are paying huge premiums often many multiples of market price for attractively toned coins and goodness help anyone who might suggest to them that these coins have had some help in getting that way. Or do we? I have a few beautifully toned coins but not like that!! Quote

Apart from a GF 1745/6 halfcrown but that's a bluish hue on a pewter grey background and I'm sure is genuine toning. Quote
azda Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Personally i Hope that those numpties that buy These artificially toned coins get their cumuppance and in 10 years or so their coins deteriorate in front if theur very eyes. Are these peiple dumb enough (which they obviously are) to actually believe that their coins Tone naturally like that? Our American Friends on this Forum are obviously excluded from my ramblings as you are aware that this cannot possibly happen to the millions of toned Coins that are being Sold in the US of A, but why theae huge premiums for a Bit of colour is beyond me. Gimme a felt tip pen and a Morgan Dollar and i'll make a nice Rainbow coloured coin to..... Quote
