Peckris Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 Hm , think you're barking up the wrong tree Steve. I'm a member of a Lumix camera forum where there hasn't been a post for several days. I'm also a member of one of the best writing forums, and I've seen in one of their main sections that there have been only three active threads in two days. This forum is usually one where you can rely on a daily contribution level. Quote

This forum is usually one where you can rely on a daily contribution level. The Lumix camera forum? They're probably all too busy answering those 'glamour shot' ads in the back of Amateur Pornographer (sorry, Photographer) As for vintage car forums, you make a fair point Derek. Car owners are more likely to seek help or try to assist each other than coin collectors who, in one sense, are actually competing with each other. Also cars are, by their very nature, more complex and demanding of advice from fellow enthusiasts. My original comments were a little tongue in cheek in respect of the regular contributors here (who now seem to have returned from Easter anyway!). However, there was an underlying serious point in relation to all the other coin collectors in the country. Most must have access to the internet. Even a cursory Google search will bring up this forum again and again so they must know of our existence. Yet the vast majority never choose to take part in our community. Why? I'm still none the wiser. Quote

My next door neighbour's 18-year old daughter used to hide behind a bush and sunbathe topless in their garden. I discovered this one day when up a ladder painting the window frames; whilst I couldn't see her directly, the reflection in the window altered the angle and revealed all. By the time I had finished there was 1/2" of paint on the sill... Quote

Yet the vast majority never choose to take part in our community. Why? I'm still none the wiser. It's an interesting question to which I don't have an answer. It'd be useful to know the proportion of the population that spend time on internet forums and not just playing games on facebook and the like. Personally I only tend to be active on one or two sites at a time and I spend what I'd imagine, by most standards, to be quite a lot of time on the internet.I do know of a few (older) collectors who just don't 'do' forums. One doesn't have the internet I'm told but the others are certainly active in their local numismatic society and could contribute. Youngsters nowadays can use an ipad before they talk, so it might be assumed there would be some on here, however it's also apparent that fewer kids seem interested in coin collecting than when I were a lad. My daughter is in her late teens and I don't know any of her friends that have expressed any interest in coin collecting. And if you look at the member list the vast majority come here to ask one or two questions and then go. Which again, sort of makes sense as if you discover a coin or are given one by a relative, you want to know what it is it's worth. But to actually collect requires some disposable income and commitment.I guess comparison with some philatelic sites might yield some answers, or perhaps comparison with sites for US coins. But really the only people that can tell us why they don't join in when they could .. aren't here! In the meantime, maybe Debbie can answer this one. She's a newer member and .. unusual in being female (I mean here of course, I seem to remember quite a few other females around last time I ventured out of my cave to visit the 'real world' ;P) She could like many others have dropped in, asked a question and gone again. But she stayed and contributes. Any particular reason Debbie? Apart from our charm and good looks of course ... Quote

Apart from our charm and good looks of course ...Mmmm I’ve often asked myself that question – especially when you lot seem to want to talk about vintage cars, pies and topless teenage girls… I had been reading the forum for a while before posting and as I have said before was impressed by the knowledge and expertise of fellow members and moreover the friendliness and willingness to answer questions. It was aZda who said he hoped that I would post again sometime, so I thought why not. I have also mentioned before that it is easy for me to keep up with the forum as I am sat at my computer / tablet most of the time with my work. I also think its great that there are contributions from members all round the world.Coin collecting has got a bit of a nerdy reputation and I don’t know any others that collect coins male or female outside this forum.I must say that with now concentrating on collecting engraved coins and love tokens that I have probably opted for the most “romantic and girly†side of coin collecting, but I’m still enjoying myself and I have to say that more so for being part of this online community. All I can say is, thank God my neighbours don't collect coins!!!Mine did and I have to say that life was far from antisocial. Daily comparing of notes and sharing libraries made for a very sociable existence. Lots of head ups and two brains are always better than one. Quote

coin watch Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 My 17 year old son is under pain of death should he mention to his scrote mates even a whisper about my coin collection.Yes just the sort of reason I was thinking of. I find it very difficult to talk about hobby face to face, not so much because of the "nerd" label (though I probably am one!) but because of the uncomfortable feeling I would get from thinking who else was listening. So yeah coin collecting is a lonely hobby, but for security reasons it's better that way. One the other hand I do have a life away from coins so am I anti-social............yeah probably!!!!!!! Quote

Red Riley Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 I'm about to collect my two teenage daughters from school... All I can say is, thank God my neighbours don't collect coins!!!In my defence I would say that the 'window event' happened a good many years ago when I was not actually collecting, so that may itself say that since I've become a coin collector again I am no longer interested in teenage girls sunbathing topless. And this in turn may all be used as evidence that the coin collector is in fact nerdy and whoever posted the original heading to this thread had actually hit the nail on the head by saying we are all in fact anti-social creeps!Phew! Anyway, to continue another point made above concerning coin clubs. The big problem that I have always had is that short of heading into Central London, there really aren't any within reasonable striking distance; yes, I do regularly attend Reading CC where I have a table and generally an enjoyable evening out but it is an hour's drive away and you would need to be pretty committed to attend on anything like a regular basis. My point here I guess is that there just aren't enough clubs out there to make coin collecting a more sociable activity. Whether this is due to there not being enough collectors sociable enough to found societies, or just not enough collectors in total is obviously open to conjecture. Quote
