I also saw the lines, but Let's Be honest, i have'nt Seen one so good. Pix were crap, had to take them inside As it was raining, so hopefully 2 more tomorrow if its clear.I was thinking it was more "lightly cleaned" as There's no shine associated with buffing Quote

It was graded (typically harshly) at NEF and sometime lightly cleaned.Lot 367 for those who are interested. Quote

Probably wise to check out PCGS's stance on cleaned items ?Shame, but keep going, roll with the punches and come up smiling ready for another Quote

Accumulator Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 The DNW auction archive doesn't show photos unfortunately, so hard to make a comparison. Dave, describing your coin as "cleaned" would perhaps be a little harsh as the marking is relatively localised and only evident on the obverse. It looks more like someone has removed a stain in the past so perhaps "damaged" is a fairer description? As always, it depends if you're selling or buying! Quote

Not sure about PCGS, but NGC/NCS gives you your choice, if has been cleaned. They will either slab it as "Authentic", without a grade, or give it a "Details" grading with a notation that it has been cleaned. Quote
coin watch Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I'm a late English hammered man myself but sometimes I am a little curious about the interest in some milled coins especially ones with a known rarity like this one.I can fully understand a desire to gain a rare coin in your chosen collecting field as I have been through this on numerous occasions with what I like, but what I find interesting with a milled coin like this is the seemingly high level of desire to own one, going by Spink's book guide price would suggest a coin of great rarity, but is it? Rayner suggested R2, what R2 is in known numbers I don't know but when comparing with other know rarities the price does seem a lot? All I can imagine is that there must be many more poeple interested in the milled series which in some way involves a coin like this. So does anyone know how many of these coins exist or maybe more important how many collectors interested in owning one? Just interested in your thoughts! Quote
