Indeed so Matt. These are no ordinary coins being sold. They are top end examples of their dates. Is Guy selling a collection, or is he a dealer?

Guy has two usernames on CGS his own collection is The coinery.

The other is TC coins and thats his duplicates/spares

a few highlights of the week

in a recent bulk buy

about £11.20

and found this in a load of pennies at the dealers I have been through and ignored many times, no idea how I missed it.

1890 narrow date, wasn't really looking for it, but it stands out.

Unfortunately yes, if I'm honest it looks a tiny bit redder than my picture in hand but nothing like the picture I bought it based on. I was expecting something special.

I have said before its all well and good when a seller says look at the photos and judge for yourself . At least show a photo that resembles the tone/colour of the coin.

I have viewed many of this sellers coins and yet to make a purchase but having seen this will have to think twice now.

Exactly, so you would think there would be some lustre, somewhere! 

Oh well, onto the next.

I got those coins from Guy yesterday too so filled a few gaps. Need to start on the veiled heads now.

yea 34s are mint toned, it looks like it in the seller photo, just seems to be overly lit.

As you may know I am a beginner and I did not know this until around a week ago (thanks to this forum )

Both books I have that came recommended to me, CCGB and David Groom Bronze Coinage do not mention that the '34 is a mint toned coin. (I will be getting the new Freeman book when it is out)

I am not knocking the seller whatsoever. They have a fantastic feedback rating of 100%.

My gripe is regarding photos in general and the "cover all"  statements of "look for yourself" etc. that is very common on most ebay auctions.

If you are selling a coin at least show a decent photo that resemble the actual colour/tone, call it what you will, of coin for sale. I know a little about  photography (I am no expert by any means) but at least my own photos look like the coins I have. Read up about things like lighting and white balance to suit the lighting you have etc etc.

As an example take a look at the Copthorne Collection photos on Colin Cooke site and then take a look at the Vendors photos on his site.

A few more dealers/sellers should take a leaf out of your book.

£8 on eBay. Not sure I'll actually find a better one, definitely not for that price.
