Hi All

Is this an Open 3 penny. I know the condition is terrible but just want to know your thoughts.

Appologise for the bad quality images.

Thanks

It was the top that was bothering me. Its not brilliant but may do as a temporary gap filler for my collection. I missed out on Rash's on Ebay. It made a great price!

I don't think it is a open three! The way the top is curved is a givaway! :)

Yes i agree on the top curve i would of taken a chance for £2.00 as Brian did and would of gambled ,it wasnt on ebay

and for that money can always throw it away.

Anyway Brian can you please put the pictures up of the blown up date and hope your lucky.

Pete.

Will let you know when it arrives Rash. Only litteraly a couple of pounds wasted if it turns out to be just a worn out ordinary 1903 so no harm.

Brian if it turns out to be wrong as the top part of the three looked...... throw it in the bin.

Maybe bite the bullet and just buy one for £80 ish,i believe they are becoming more common like the 1863 open penny and other documented varieties

The chances of buying one on ebay unrecognised is slim as people are always looking.

Keep searching and more importantly enjoy it but remember if the coin is referenced others are looking aswell.

I have bought numerous copper pennies looking at the variety that were garbage but always learning and not cost me much to find out.

Well said Pete, plus the fact that if there is an unattributed open 3 on ebay, Scott will have bought it before anyone else sees it

It is well documented though and people seem to be more vigilant these days.

Hi Folks,

Just to keep you all updated I recieved the coin and it was just a nasty worn out standard 1903. It cost a little under 3 Euro inc of P&P so only about £2 wasted so worth the risk at that.

Nevermind, back to the hunt :D

Cheers

Not to worry Brian ,think probably everyone on here who collects pennies has bought a variety at sometime from a bad picture ,hoping its one they are looking for.

Only to end up being garbage :D .

Better luck next time ;) .

I think because of the sheer number of people checking every 1903 or 1911 for a gouby x that your only hope to get one for a quid is to gamble on bad photos!

But yes, I've bought many an under £5 coin for it to be nothing. All good fun :)
