    I took the lot to LCA at the Midland fair today, and met Semra. She had no issues taking the lot back, just said they'd have to check their records before sending a refund cheque out. So far so good.

    Dave, slabbed coins have been sent to a grading company, authenticated and graded so you should know that they are not fake and their condition has been assessed. The grading company, in this case CGS, then enclose the coin in a plastic "slab" to ensure the coin remains undamaged, unhandled, and the condition does not therefore change.

    If you collected them from circulation then all is not lost Dave. Keep your eyes open for replacements then spend the ones you've cleaned. It'll take a little time but hopefully no expense.

    Well here's my chance to test that. I bought lot 1703 at the June auction. Bit of a punt as no photos, but this is the "11 leaf" 1797 penny they sent me:

    I did have a bid on one of those model pennies in the Copthorne Pete, lot 221. Outbid as usual but they didn't seem to be so scarce that I wouldn't see another. Some interesting ones there though, I'd quite like one.

    That's what made me suggest it. Lots of people splitting up sets because they want a nice BUNC 50p / £1 etc then selling the rest on. Not something that appeals to me though.

    You could buy another one then sell the first set as individual coins. You probably wouldn't lose very much.
