  1. I think Paulus has had one or two that were rejected for various reasons. It would be interesting to see them and the reason for the rejection.
  2. Is there any feedback as yet on this cleaner? I have a couple of low value ish coins that could do with a good de gunking so have read this therad with interest.
  3. Hi Frank, it looks like you have caught buyeverythingasitus. I really, really suffered with it when I first started collecting (and still do now to a degree), sorry it seems to be contagious! I pretty much did as you are now, bought things I liked and tried to get my head around the grading. It helped for sure but I also feel I probably did not spend my funds as wisely as I could. Going to the monthly coin fair has helped a lot as you get to see so many different coins in all grades and prices brackets. I am still way way off all of the experts on here and still make plenty of mistakes but as I posted when you joined it really is worth saving the £10/£15 buys unless you find a cracker that others have missed and go for some higher grade (EF) stuff. I have stuff I bought early on that I really liked at the time but have found myself wanting to upgrade it. Also what I considered EF has changed as time has gone on. I see coins on some of the facebook groups I would have bid on in the past that I know just let them go by. People like Paulus, Coinary, Rob (and all the others that hae offered my advice so far!) are all really helpful so do not be afraid to get opinions on stuff before you buy. It looks like you have made a nice start to your collection but once you get a really nice gEF to Unc coin in your collection you will want more like them Keep the pics rolling in!
  4. A couple of newbies purchased in the last week or so:
  5. It is back up again and has bids this time: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hammered-Silver-Coin-LVN-DONIA-CIVIT-EFLBERHT-REX-/262222475840?hash=item3d0dad7240:g:4EIAAOSwSdZWhCR9
  6. Welcome Frank, being relatively new myself I can tell you that you have done the right thing joining here. Two of the best bits of advice I have had from members here were buy the book before the coin and buy the highest grade you can, EF and up where budgets allow. I can recommend the books Chris publishes here as a great starting point for learning about grades and ball park figures on prices. Just check the shop on the main predecimal page.
  7. I plan to be there all being well.
  8. My latest edition, a 1902 circulation Halfcrown
  9. Your photos have come on leaps and bounds Paulus.
  10. 1899 crown: CGS 80 1707 halfcrown: No idea 1911 halfcrown: CGS 88 1911 florin: CGS 88 1902 florin: CGS 82 1736 shilling: No idea 1911 shilling: CGS 82 1674 sixpence No idea
  11. Not the best picture or the rarest coin but nicely toned and better in hand than on my dodgy pics
  12. Yes Jerry, always nice to put a face to a name/alais
  13. Just a small bump as I have added some new stuff recently such as:
  14. Thanks Stuntman, that was an ebay bargin, partially down to the fact the seller (who is 'well known' for toned coins) had taken some pictures of the coin that I did not believe relected what it actually looked like. Having seen some of their ebay pictures versus what their coins look like in hand at coin fairs I was confident it was not as bad as the picture made out. It is not EF but it is vertainly a gVF and I got it for about £50!
  15. My latest Halfcrown, an upgrade on my current 1887 (No Cayman unfortunatly)
  16. They are sealed from what I understand and you need to use force to get them open.
  17. This, along with the other CGS/slab threads make an interesting read. As a newbie I can see the attraction of having someone look over your coin and independently grade it hopefulyl validating what you believe its grade is so much so I am considering submitting 3 or 4 of my coins. One of my over riding concerns was not that fact that something may get rejected (I am learning, it will happen) but that it will get rejected and slabbed. If it was made clear on any submission that you did not want any coin rejected to be slabbed would they honour your request?
  18. It's getting there for sure. I need to upgrade a few already and would like some more 1816 to mid Victoria stuff in there when the budget allows.
  19. So I have not updated this for a while. I have been mainly focusing on Halfcrowns and have added a few to my collection via people off here (thank you Sound, Paulus) coins fairs and the dreaded ebay. The link is in my signature takes you to my site but his is the link straight to my Halfcrowns as it stands. I would welcome any feedback, I know not all coins there are EF+ but some have them have been purchased at very good prices in my opinion for the grades that they are.
  20. Very sorry to hear that, words cannot express how you must be feeling right now. My condolences to you and your family.
  21. I only recently started collecting Dan but am finding the hobby a real pleasure. I am trying to focus on Halfcrowns but as you saw on my penny post I keep getting distracted The people here are in the main helpful, everyone I have spoken directly to has been happy to reply, comment and offer advice.
  22. 1p 2p 5p 10p 20p for me so far.
  23. I agree but the way it read was that they Quadrums were in stock here. I had previosuly checked, saw they were not here and ordered elsewhere. I, wrongly, took your post as an indication that Chris now stocked the Quadrums.
