  1. That's a gawjus one Nick Edit: so is the 1907, right up my street!
  2. While this one has an even(ish) golden tone: Intriguing isn't it, I would say that >95% of my silver coins exhibit no obvious signs of toning at all. Does anyone have any examples of toned ancient coins? Not sure I have seen any (at least not with the sort of toning exhibited in this thread)!
  3. I'm getting such an attack of the 'I wants' from the pics on here, I definitely prefer attractively naturally toned coins to un-toned (I guess that's obvious!) It really is a joy looking through these!! Another E7, this one with some gentle lilac toning:
  4. I was rather hoping to see some more of Rob's coins in this thread! Excellent!! :)
  5. I rather like this one Me too!
  6. Because I DO like a bit of NT (assuming that is what it is!) Another then for comments and debate!
  7. I suspect there are members like Rob and Nick who could post very impressive examples! And Peter's collection must be impressive but I have yet to see any of it! Come on everyone, toned coins with pics please! ... and Neil of course, what is your most attractive toned coin you have for sale in your opinion?
  8. This topic is mainly about whether toning adds to the eye appeal and/or value of any of the coins depicted here, which will inevitably be subjective! I am going to post a few pics of my favourite toned coins, and all comments are welcome as far as NT/AT, eye appeal, grade, authenticity etc!! My avatar coin first: Another toned E7: I want to see other members' NT examples, I love them all! I have more examples to post, but I will wait to see if there is interest from other Forum members for this topic
  9. Not a competition, thought it would be interesting to have pics of members NT (hopefully) coins, I know I would love to see them! Another fan of my avatar coin (beginner's luck)! We never get to see Peter's coins, must be impressive!?? And where is a pic of you Peter to add to the gallery??
  10. When I bought my first hammered coin, I spent my whole time thinking 'this can't be real, surely?' 'A sixpence of E1 for less than £20, no way, can't be genuine?'How is it, then, that for everyone else, who know absolutely nothing about coins, and who have probably never even seen a Tudor coin before, let alone own one, take so much convincing that the item they have is actually a fake? It never ceases to amaze me? I had the same feeling, when I started collecting Roman, Tudor and medieval coins ... how on earth can the half-decent examples I had acquired for a few quid be for real? I believed them to be, but if someone had said at the time " ha-ha, of course you realise these are 19th/20th century forgeries!" I would not have been surprised! But some people have a different perspective on things I think!!
  11. Can't help it, although it does get my heckles up big time. I was just reading some Coin News articles about toning and AT from a few years ago, and they stress that one of the main motivations behind AT (apart from inflating the price) is to hide imperfections ... something to bear in mind! The toning IMO is an imperfection. AT yes, totally agree, the articles I was reading suggest that an artificial toner is no different to a forger. I am a fan of attractive (to my eyes) natural toning, makes a change from a collection full of bright BUs alone! I don't regard NT as an imperfection per se, do you Peter?Me neither. Mind you, there's pretty NT and there's downright ugly NT too! Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, as it always has been of course, but I am going to start a thread dedicated to members' (and anyones') favourite toned examples ... might (or might not) provide a source of interesting debate ...
  12. Hmm. Three fairly new bidders. When I looked earlier two of them had 100% bidding history with the seller. I wonder what could be going on there... Well it is half a shilling ... baffling otherwise!A quarter, Paulus! It's a 3d Oh yes lol, I'm actually quite good at figures too! Which means of course that if it WAS a sixpence there would be twice as many fake bidders!

  14. Can't be a fake then, stand down Peter!

  17. Like my 'Emperor's new clothes' comment, when is someone going to say "hang on, this is utter nonsense!" ... for those the other side of the pond, especially those with a vested interest, probably never! Guess I only mind so much because it might make a laughing stock of our hobby, let's hope not!
  18. The first 2 coins in this link actually have a rainbow running through them ... am I imagining things or has this got too ridiculous for words?Utterly speechless! If enough hasn't already been said to discredit the TPGC's on this forum, it certainly is very nicely consolidated in this thread! It's a bit like a Noel Edmond's Gottcha...I keep expecting someone to jump out and say April Fool! Someone? Anyone? I can't take this nonsense area of the coin market anymore...I'm totally incredulous! I'm with you Stuart, what on earth is going on, can't even accept it as a weird marketing ploy! Totally gob-smacked by all this rainbow stuff, zip up zippy!

  20. Am I the only one to think that that is ridiculous? What is the argument that it should be other than 50-50? I'm amazed the coin contributes as much as 20% of the score, let alone the reverse only. I thought it was all to do with marks out of 10 in the Warhol-esque abstract art section. It certainly has bu**er all to do with the contents of the slab on too many occasions.
  21. Couldn't agree more Peck, definitely not my cup of tea! One of my many criteria for what I keep or sell is 'do I enjoy owning/looking/holding it, does it have eye appeal and a sense of history for me?' That one to me is utterly ridiculous, it's not even as if you could use the weight to authenticate it with any certainty!!
  22. Am I the only one to think that that is ridiculous? What is the argument that it should be other than 50-50?
  23. Another quote from the thread: "I took a great course on toning at the ANA many years ago, presented by Bob Campbell, he said always look for attractive toning, and that original toning always follows the color spectrum of the rainbow, in nature, if the colors are in a different order then it is most likely artificial toning and not worth buying. As to how much premium to pay? That is totally up to the buyer. Some of the monster toned Morgans can be astronomical priced when compared to a price sheet." Colours of the rainbow?? But coins don't tone red, then orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, do they? They start a pinkish grey and go a bluish grey with occasional gold highlights. Of if dipped they seem to go a bit yellower. And eventually, black. But a progression? Not in my (admittedly limited) experience. I suspect there's less science than wishful thinking myself. After all, who is going to admit to paying over the odds for an AT coin? Attractive? Then it must be natural (they tell themselves...) A "course on toning"? Good grief, I hope he simply means he "attended a presentation" ! It's all 'Emporer's new clothes' stuff to me, and we are shouting louder and louder that it is all total nonsense!
