  1. Spink lists this at £600 in Fine, but I'm not sure what value I would guess at in that condition with verd ... hopefully others might have better idea than me! I'm going to take a shot in the (almost) dark and say £60-£100.
  2. And somewhere in the distance a clock is slowly chiming ...
  3. Do you have the eBay no. or link to the one finishing in <40 mins Dave? Edit: Guess I missed it, what did it go for, any more shilling?
  4. What a tremendous haul Declan, absolutely love the 1799 and OH shillings in particular! It's so great to be able to examine them in the hand and not pay any commission or postage into the bargain isn't it!
  5. I would agree with Dave. Bradley (A Handbook of Coins of the British Isles) states that 'In 1800 the rise in the cost of silver meant that dollars had to be revalued to 5s." I take this to mean (if correct) that all dollars in circulation at the time (whether oval or octagonal countermarked) were then worth 5 shillings from this time, as of course was the B of E Dollar dated 1804.
  6. Chris at Buckscoins said the same to me, and subsequently added: "He (the auctioneer) came and spoke to me before the sale but we had already spotted it was genuine"

  8. Thanks Rpeddie, that's exactly what I and I think others wanted to know
  9. It would be really interesting to know why CGS effectively said they were fakes ... I know you don't get this info when you enter the UIN on their website, but I have had a coin rejected by them as a forgery and they explained why, have they given you that information?
  10. From the same seller who has a listing stating: "also do not levee bad feedback until you have contacted me fist" That's hilarious, probably a BNTA member I should imagine
  11. Well it's not April 1st! If true, the estimate could be way way out!!
  12. I know I've said it once but I'm going to say it again ... I can't believe the price it went for either!!!! With BP that's over £4500, and if he sells it at auction as genuine and isn't rumbled, with no provenance, he will need to realise over £5500 just to break even (assuming commission at 20%) ... I am completely dumbfounded!!
  13. I can't believe the price it went for either! For convenience, here is what London Coins say about it: "1658 Oliver Cromwell high quality imitation in silver 30.1 grams nEF some dimples and surface bubbles reverse which would be inconsistent with the genuine issue, clearly a sharply struck rather than cast piece with edge lettering bold and of high quality, origin unknown and in need of further research"
  14. Not sure - it's definitely not a matt proof, but it has a superb obverse strike. Perhaps 'specimen' is the 'new Choice' ? I assumed that too! Aware of the description for certain coins/types but not generally!!
  15. dvw, I can let you have my Spink 2009 for the cost of P&P only if you would like it? Please PM me if interested
  16. I agree, and will also watch with interest ... I have also been surprised by how much 'Ashmore Coins' sell for on eBay, surely they are just good modern replicas?
  17. What to you think our friend Senor Lucido might mean by 'Specimen' here? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251324082190?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648
  18. In order to deceive an unsuspecting buyer. A genuine coin would sell for 4 figures. What i don't get is if its not contemporary is why they'd sell it, even ebay has rules on that So Dave you think the estimate might reflect what an unscrupulous buyer might pay for a copy he thought he could resell as genuine?
  19. Trouble is that if these types of fakes sell for theses prices,it will give them a marketable value, other than the melt value, which in turn, would in my opinion make them more acceptable in the wider coin collecting community. If the quality of this coin and the newer gothics' are anything to go by,and these are made for a few pound more than what the Silver content is valued at, I would expect to see more turning up over the next few years,or even more common coins, anything over a hundred pound and they have doubled their money. But if it's a modern Chinese copy you can just order your own on the net for around £50, if memories from a previous post are correct ... so while modern replicas already have a market I don't know why they would ever command a price much over melt ... maybe I am missing something! However I totally share the view that if they are very good and passed off as genuine, then that already is/and will increasingly be a major problem
  20. What surprises me if it it is a non-contemporary copy they have an estimate of £250 - £750 on it ... why on earth would someone pay that sort of money for it?
  21. Rob, I don't like the latest version of Photobucket either but you can still click (single left click) inside the IMG field and control + V into here, as I just have: Capturing your image and reposting via photobucket took less than 1 minute, I still think it is the best method but there may well be better alternatives to Photobucket!
  22. To be fair I had asked them to re-examine my 1707 Plumes Shilling to see if they agreed it was an 'M over inverted M in MAG' *soon after I submitted the coins), and I got this reply just this morning: Hello PaulThank you for the e-mail.UIN 28559 has been re-examined and although there is evidence of an underlying letter to the right of the upright of the M in MAG, the underlying letter is not conclusive, and in the absence of the remaining parts of the inverted M or any other letter being visible we are unable to attribute this as a new type. Many thanksPaul Redford(CGS UK) See what you think, it is UIN 28559
  23. I would echo Benny's advice, I can't find it on their site with or without the W ... they may be busy at the mo with few staff and an upcoming auction (not to mention my coins to completely complete!), but they will take the call and answer your question! And how Long has that been now since you Sent them in and then from finalisied grade Status? 6-7 weeks now since I sent them in and 2-3 weeks sitting at the final stage ... Ms Cetin (sic) phoned me 4 weeks ago to clarify something and told me to expect around 6 weeks, but the deal as we know is now up to 90 days ... maybe it's this mysterious 3rd grader up north someone mentioned that delays things? Sure is a factor for repeat business, even though I am not desperate to have them back for resale ...
