  1. Link to BBC News website Click on the video link in the upper right for more details. There is a close-up of the coins.
  2. i used to live in Peebles and got a whole lot nicked, thats why the majority of mine are in the bank as well!! oh by the way it wasnt me!! James you used to live at Peebles? then you'll know the town were I stay, Galashiels? Red I agree with you in that it is nice to have coins to study in hand. In fact I have a lot of (non valuable) coins lying around, plus some medium value ones in a small safe at home but my valuable coins are at the bank. Even if I had a great safe or in house security what’s to stop thugs breaking into my home in the hope that they might steal the safe, coins or frightening my wife etc..? There are some crazy people out there that would steal from their mum for drugs and I'm sure they would steal from me if they thought I kept coins of any value at home. Not that I am some kind of scared paranoid guy, but why invite trouble? Besides its not hard to nip to the bank and get your coin/s out if you want to study or look at them.
  3. Do you have a scanner linked to your pc? sometimes scanners produce clear detailed pictures, although they tend to loose the luster of the coin and can make them appear a bit flat.
  4. I know what you mean! classic film. Incidentally did you know the origins of the two finger V f... you salute was supposed to have came from the battle of Agincourt? Charles VI had promised to cut off the both the index and the middle fingers of any English longbow men he captured so they couldn't use the longbow again. So during the battle they would give him the now famous two finger salute in a show of defiance!
  5. Link To BBC News Edited to update the link, it now works!
  6. | got myself a new coin. 1380-1422 charles vi french ecu'or. It is nicely centered and a nice strike with minimum wear. Hard to photograph through the slab but it's nicer in hand.
  7. The unique collection, which has been valued at more than 500,000, features pieces dating back to 1136, when the very first Scottish coins were minted. A total of more than 1,000 coins were stolen from the home of Lord and Lady Stewartby in Broughton, near Peebles. A "substantial reward" has been offered to anyone who can help recover the collection. ... "We would appeal to anyone who may have information as to the whereabouts of the collection or anyone who has been offered some rare and unique coins." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotlan...and/6283688.stm it was on my local news! I live about 20 miles from there. Lucky I keep my coins at the bank!
  8. I agree with Dave. I too collect error coins and they are hard to value. It is a dramatic error and if you like the coin that's what counts. I personally feel it is a little high but, then again you may not find another like it again. Regards, Hus
  9. Hi squishycakes. I found it on one of my friend’s website from another forum. He describes it as being: "1901 Victoria Death medal Not listed in British Historical Medals so it's “Previously unknown" in rarity. This medal is Brass measures 22.5 mm 5.2 grms with Victoria on one side with date of death, on the other Edward and Alexandra. No artist name or initials" Click on here for link to webpage As for value, well it is rare but since it is unpublished it’s hard to say. Basically it is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and if you get a couple of people interested the price would go up.
  10. Mine is a obverse incuse die trial for a farthing, or more likely a sovereign as the die's were used on the sovereigns first then once the dies were considered to be not good enougth to use to mint sovereigns they used them to mint farthings.
  11. One way to get round it is to post the pictures on another site, image hoster, photo bucket etc. Then click on the picture of the tree in the post message/reply message writing section. Then copy and past the pictures url (www...) into the "enter the complete url" box. Finaly post your message and this should work.

    Hi

Welcome Steve, I too had to let my collection go when I was an early teenager, and then stopped collecting until the collecting bug caught me again a few years ago! This is a great forum to learn, share advice, ask questions and take part in. There are a few very knowledgeable members. I'm sure you will enjoy it here.
  13. Oh well the $36 coin sold for $157.50 LINK Don't know about you guys but when I see " User ID kept private " it usually signals alarm bells in my head.
  14. I'm not happy they are reuniting just amused. I wasn't a fan by a long shot. They must need the money or miss the attention.
  15. No they are full brockages. I have got the 25 Kurus brokage pair and the 50 Kurus brokage pair. Similar reverse 25 Kurus coin dated 2000 PSGS MS64 can be seen in Mike Byers's sold coins museum: byersnc.com/museum I don't know how much his sold for though?
  16. Seriously the Royal mint are starting to churn out more and more modern comemerative "collectable" junk by the bucket load lately. In Junes issue of Coin News they even advertised a "striking carousel money box in hand-crafted silver pewter and gold, to a Diamond wedding celebration bell in silver plate and rose gold". They are starting to loose the art factor and replacing it with the tat factor.
  17. Superb coins scottishmoney. I am going to have to buy myself a nice US gold coin one of these days. Also hot on my list are Italy and France. That is beautiful. Really nice colour, is it like that in the flesh?
  18. Wow never heard of that one Chris. Will have to check my circulation £2 coins now.
  19. Your theory has a lot of truth in it scottishmoney: eBay link You can but these for $36 on Antiquanova. Link
  20. Geordie found this site. link click here They make their own hammered replica coins. Scarily and worryingly accurate!
  21. Indeed I think your right Peter! I remember reading an article on him in the past. Anyway found a seller selling a few of his coins on ebay at the moment for anyone interested. Ebay link
  22. I have been playing about with my camera trying to get some better pictures of my coins. I thought I would share my world gold coin pictures with you. It is a side line in my collecting interest but steadily growing. Please feel free to post pictures of your gold coins it would be interesting to see others too!
  23. Hi I have been playing with my camera and updating my gold coin collection. I stubled on this one again. Can anyone help with who made it and when. I assume it is a fantasy piece. It is the same size and weight of a half Sovereign and minted in gold (but probably not 22k as the colour is a bit mellow). Thanks in advance. Hus
