  1. Advanced knowledge of mintage figures could be very lucrative. I wonder how many RM employees bulk buy those issues that they know will see a premium on the secondary market?
  2. I'm no expert but look interesting
  3. " One Farthing 1835 William IV unc " What do you think unc stands for? certainly not un-circuleted!
  4. But if you bid the most you are willing to pay, it doesn't matter if you get out bid at 1 second or 1 week.
  5. Decades of research ahead, for someone.
  6. Hi Tommy, I don't have the expertise to comment on your crown, but for a first British purchase you have certainly aimed high with a Gothic Crown. Welcome to the forum, there are many VERY experienced collectors and dealers on here who are very generous with their time and knowledge, I'm sure you will learn a huge amount from them as well as bringing your own knowledge to the rest of us. Ian..
  7. I'm sure the Royal Mint would come out with the same old bull of "These coins are Legal Tender, they are not intended for use in transactions and banks don't have to take them, blah, blah, blah" That said I'm sure a number of the £5 & especially the 50p coins which are also distributed along with the maundy money get spent. Ian..
  8. Nice set David, thanks for posting, and to have a family link, even better. The set I have seen was purchased by a friend, I'll find out what his set includes.
  9. Having seen a full set (ie all of the coins given to one individual) I was surprised to find that there wasn't an even number or each denomination + a few odds there were far more of one denomination (2 pence if I remember correctly). So there will not be as many "full sets" as the age of the Monarch would imply. It begs the question, in any given year do all of the recipients receive the same mix of coins or does one recipient get a glut of 1p / 1d and another get a glut of 2, 3 or 4? Anyone know?
  10. Hi Alex, It looks as if it comes from the Far East to me but don't recognise it, it might help if you can post a picture of the other side? Ian..
  11. I have scanned coins and medals for speed but I'm never happy with the results, there again I'm not much happier with my photos
  12. It must take some effort to snap a coin in two.
  13. I'm a happy boy. Thanks Brian
  14. Still looking Got two bags of 50p from the bank last weekend, one bag only had commemoratives, but nothing of much interest. Ian..
  15. The Tyneside Numismatic Society, 7:30 Wednesday, and you would be most welcome.
  16. The obverse is in such good nick, it cant have seen much circulation, are there any clues to the date of the coin Brian? I'd love to see it in hand if you are going to TNS next week. Ian..
  17. Interesting thought Rob, with the imaging software available these days it should be possible to automate grading, that is if it could differentiate scratches, dings etc from the design. Could be a nice little engineering project for someone. Would slash the cost of Third Party Grading, but I doubt it would stop the arguments. Ian..
  18. When they due you Rob for counterfeiting Rob, dont forget to pay your fine in £100 tokens
  19. It's not only the definition of "legal tender" which I think is a much misunderstood term, but their use of the term "face value" which they say they are selling the coins at. Yes the face of the coin states £100 etc but surely "face VALUE" suggests the coin has that value? Are these even coins? or just tokens or medallions with some meaningless legend "£100" I would love someone being sued by the RM for payment, to pay them in there own so called coins. Ian..
  20. Token arrived today, thanks Chris, nice grade and great price. You know where I am if you "chance upon" any others Ian..
  21. Or have they minted more, undermining the value even more? Just got your 2016 decimal book Chris, great work, will have to check all my coins again for varieties I didn't know existed. Ian..
  22. Sorry, that should have read Big Ben not Buckingham Palace. And I haven't even had a drink tonight!
  23. Hi, For anyone who missed out on the £100 Buckingham Palace coin, the Royal Mint are selling them through their eBay shop for just £100 post free. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Royal-Mint-Big-Ben-2015-UK-100-Fine-Silver-Coin-UK15100B-/152016434474?hash=item2364e2b52a:g:asoAAOSwFNZWvJLt So much for them selling out within hours! Ian..
  24. Hi Ben, You will find there is lots of very knowledgeable people on here, all generous with their time and knowledge to help you out, but as said above, find something that you like and set small goals, maybe just one denomination of one monarch, than you can expand into other denominations or reigns as you get more experience. One piece of advice that many give is to always buy the best you can afford. Ian..
