    It may depend on the light source. If the light source varies continuously with temperature then the resulting images may depend on how long the light has been switched on.

    Cameo effect comes from the recessed portion of the die (the portrait and devices) being treated with acid to dullen the shiny surface, whereas the flat portion of the die (the field) is highly polished (as are the blanks). When a cameo die is used, I assume (but don't know for sure) that over time the die gradually loses its highly polished nature and the result is a lessening of the cameo effect. Looks like you have a lovely specimen (assuming the reverse is as good).

    And can you tell me whether there are any hairlines or blemishes that are not apparent in the photos (which is where the criticism originated)? The 1902 matt proof crowns quite often show die polishing raised hairlines in the fields (as per attached), but I can't see any in your photos.

    Thanks for the examples. They are certainly quite different, especially the white balance. Which of the two setups most closely match what the coin looks like in hand? Or does it vary?

    If anybody has any photos of coins bought at LCA which were then slabbed and photographed by CGS, it would be interesting to see the comparison.

    They are. But they are exactly the same quality as those taken for LCGS for which they are charging a fee. To my mind, they are not of sufficient quality to warrant any charge.

    If not required, predictive text can be easily turned off.

    You may be able to change a setting in your camera to produce JPG files. My Nikon allows me to choose the file formats NEF, NEF & JPG or just JPG.

    Regardless of whether their photographic setup is intending to deceive, the fact remains that the photo is not an accurate representation of the subject. Therefore, all of their pictures must be viewed with a healthy dose of scepticism. Given the lack of quality of their pictures, it's even more surprising that they can charge £99 a year just to behold them.

    It is for me. I checked my number before posting in the toned silver thread and it had increased by one when I looked afterwards.

    I do like the coloured tone of the 1911 proofs. I'll bet they are even more colourful than the picture suggests.
