  1. Dave.....thats a mighty impressive result. my question is though......what's the difference between tarnishing and toning? and equally important if their the same, why remove it?. i have to say, i like your coin in both pictures, theres been lots of discussion on this forum about shiny versus toned for silver, with many preferring toned to bright, the reasoning being the toning adds that bit of character.....if i were buying your coin......the toned pic may sell it to me. ski

  8. David Groom notes both varieties in his book but for business strikes, however CGS have both varieties listed for busines strikes and proofs. ski.
  9. and yet sometimes difficult to be completely reproducable on a consistant scale. its a wonderful concept.....the process can be initiated on a very basic level by individuals working to a time scale, its human nature to develop easy ways and short cuts to achieve an end product..........but at that time, with the limited resources, im not so sure. that said if blank flans were prepared by 1 or 2 individuals....who knows.........worth persuing. are there blank files ever reported/ found from this mint for these coins? ski
  10. me too, two to Dave...........i hope the Queen is proud of us
  11. once a scot always a scot, taffy tommy paddy etc etc......good, .......okays here the wiki quote. so just proves these colonials dont speak proper english like wot we does.

  15. if this was the process set up at the exeter mint and it did produce crowns where the shape of the flan could give information on production runs, may i ask.......would we not see similarities with other denominations produced at that mint?? ski

  17. warning, warning, less than useful response coming up due to a knowledge score of ZERO on this period of coinage, i can only say.......i lurve #3 and #9. werent coins trimmed by dodgy oiks of the time to get a little silver.....could it be that some of the cuttings of the coins shown was maybe post production?
  18. Hi Nickie.......welcome to the forum.......the olympic 50p collection certainly seems to have started a lot of people on the path of coin collecting. just a few words of advice........if your thinking of buying coins from ebay, ebay sellers describe many 50p coins as very rare or extremely rare and theyre not, dont be fooled into paying over inflated prices for coins that are fundamentally worth at best 50p!!!. enjoy the forum ski
  19. i dont know kinda why i was looking for some advice....... okay....i guess nice will have to do.
  20. nearly as old as me!!!! .....me too would you agree that grade is fine?.

  24. i think most people understood it, its just that it wasnt really relevant to the interview.
  25. its a lesson learnt for sure, but now with that knowledge, your better placed to bid in any future auction. dont dismiss auctions on the basis of 1 bad experience, by bidding on individual coins rather than bulk lots, you may fare better. ive never bought a bulk lot, ive had reasonable success with my bids on individual coins, i have returned 1 coin (in many lots)as i thought it wasnt of the grade the listing suggested and was given a full refund. maybe ask some help here on a piece and take another punt. ski
