  1. im a little concerned about this coin.....firstly, the emergency sale.....maybe genuine. but for me the ngc slab doesnt seem right.....ive only 3 ngc slabs, they all have under the bar code either ngc or the full title......this coin doesnt have either. ive trawled the ngc site and cannot find a coin without this titling under the bar code. secondly the reverse hologram is like no other ive seen.....and finally, when you enter the id in the ngc website....no pic. what do you think? ski
  2. and of course the possibility of the production run coming to an end and the presses dies changed to a different denomination.........so maybe 2 presses running, 1 with good dies and 1 with the variety dies......up goes youre number of the variety coin......maybe
  3. sorry paulus....i must have writing my reply just at the same time as you.......ski
  4. hiya......the man depicted is Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was issued in 2006 to celebrate 200 years since his birth. ski
  5. yes i am....im also reading...........and some of the reply's here have suggested that an exclusive survey as you;ve suggested may not contact enough collectors who own this coin, and too wide a survey (slabs, ebay) may also give false readings as mentioned. a very early reply suggested contacting the mint, good advice i think. so, from the replys here how many of the people who have so far joined in on this topic, this being a very exclusive survey, have replied saying they own this coin?.......ive had a very quick look back......to me it just looks like you. so weve accounted for 1 out of the 10.......taking this surveys results alone......your coin is indeed much scarcer than r5 would suggest, i hope you find another 9......i seriously hope you dont find any more than 9........if your investement is based on 10 examples then your investement may be compromised if you find 20 or 30 or more.
  6. you cant.....hows your number crunching programme going to work.....lets assume there is only 10 then......yours and nine others.....and those other nine are slabbed?.........so forget those 9, so now youve the only one.......what have you learnt?.......nothing nil zip....... okay ive got 15 of them then......now, you happy?
  7. okay thanks peckris.....cant wait to try it out......by the way.....ive got a beautiful electric blue toned 1839 proof sixpence......i believe i may have read somewhere, possibly here, that blue toning is achieved by storing near a heat source is that right, or have i remembered it incorrectly? ski
  8. i think its fair to say 1 of the coins is on a par with your coin dave......the other 2 are not as bad as the coin mr platt is advertising.....maybe theyre between the two.......will get the camera out at the weekend and post some pics so that you can judge. I have decided to give it a go and have sorted out a couple of very low grade shillings. will post those results too, dave you recommend 10 secs of dip and then washing.......any minimum amount of time for the rinse? if the rinse is too short could the dip attack the coins surface? ski
  9. im sorry but ive got no stomach for that thought.
  10. contact all collectors.......thats easy!!!........and how do you go about contacting non collectors who has inherited grandads collection and dont know of its significance yet??? i think an educated estimate from those who know about these crowns and their history, is probably as good as its going to get. ski
  11. thats all you girls ever think about.......sex and cake... oh and chocolate.......which you can get at christmas shaped like coins...yay
  12. har har har...........that made me chuckle for sure.
  13. okay......ta
  14. ok maybe not a wardrobe ......
  15. journalism
  16. okay thanks, so i got to leave by the radiator for a long time to tone......right?......i recall you saying once to leave them on top of a wardrobe.....is that better for copper/bronze?
  17. continuing my interest in apparantly unsellable coins, ive now moved from double florins ( still looking for a roman 1 proof, dealers ) to 3 shilling coins. a local dealer has a very nice 1814 coin which appears to be a proof. spink or esc do not list proof for this year. ive also noticed london coins have an 1811 unrecorded proof for sale. does anyone here have any experience of the possibility of there being any unrecorded proofs for the 1814 3 shillings......any dealers handled/sold a piece like this? thanks........ski
  18. yes there seems to be a bit of an overlap between the two, being ugly and calling it tarnish helps in understanding the diference and knowing why toning is good. ......thats where im at with a couplle of my coins.....im suspicious
  19. the things you can learn here eh?.......fascinating im gonna test your jam theory next time im in africa.
  20. difficult to say from the pic.....my gut response is yes.....because it looks a little flat, less lustrous....if you know what i mean....i have a couple of florins that i think may have been dipped......theyre clean for sure but somehow dont feel right. i think im going to have to try this for myself on a couple of lower grade coins......interesting.
  21. i think its a personal view that goes with age, i donth think a 1967 penny is old, my son thinks its ancient, my 1554 tanner, now thats old......to me......but not to my mother-in-law who can probably remember the day it was struck . sorry debbie....but coming back to cars...... arent there veteran and vintage classes, a moving scale based on age of the vehicle......i think thats how we look at age, with a coin, the scale moves with the owner/viewer. ski
  22. i must be older then, i was allowed to watch "f troop"......the world was still black and white. mmmmmm.......daisy
  23. im glad peckris isnt here tonight............we would both be in for a ticking off............ coming back to the coin shown at the start of the thread........dipping may improve the coin, or not dependant on your view, as you say it may make it blotchy.....i think that was the term used.......looking out for a more pleasing example may be the better option rather than trying to make the coin something it isnt and maybe reducing its value along the way. tarnishing/toning...........i can see what your saying, maybe the difference is as you say, tarnish is the build up of grime...........im still not sure if i personally like coins dipped or cleaned, maybe for me the crud is good.
  24. divining is a lot easier on a beach dont you think?.........do you really need the rods
  25. your words had me drifting away to a far flung paradise where the trout is delivered from a farm and the smell of bacon and shrimps waft through the balmy evenings air, pink floyds "marooned" burst my eardrums adding to the atmosphere and wine ads to the mood...........and then you f**k it up by mentioning the x factor........... at least the datsun cherry brings us back to the subject of FOOD.
