By the mid 60's virtually all the KNs had been lifted from circulation, worn specimens are probably now commoner than the RM strikings. I only ever found one 1926ME and one 1897 High Tide in circulation. The latter much rare than the 2mm, but catalogues less in Spink - odd, expect it's the demand thing for a better known, easier to spot variety David

This came today, so reviving this old thread a 1911 1d Gouby obv X. Had a bit of a clean but better than my other two all three have I of BRITT and I of IMP to border teeth, I think I have looked at every 1911 penny on Ebay over the last 12 months this is the 3rd I've found, not convinced that the hollow neck exists without this alignment David

Not often you see one of those in change! For this particular issue medal alignment is standard, no idea why they should be the opposite to most other coins in circulation at the time but there you go. Is the edge milled or plain? If it's plain you've got yourself a proof, if it's milled it's the bog standard circulation variety. Cool find nonetheless! Oldest circulating coin find on the forum? Can't beat that, though i did find a wren farthing in my change once, which I assume was circulating as a 1p

That is a very fair point of view David. It is also one that I personally share. Even though it is Legal Tender, if it is not used in every day transactions then it doesn't qualify as a coin. As I said, I asked out of curiosity to try to find out what peoples definitions were on what makes a coin I do however think some of the Brittanias are very pretty, just not my thing It's the same with stamps, although I no longer collect them; I always considered a nice postally used specimen far more desirable than mint unhinged that seems now to be the preferred option for collectors.

Happened quite a lot. The French 10 centimes 1857D has a recorded mintage of 698,830; but no one has ever found one - probably all dated 1856

Right click on the denomination you want to add in the collection window and then select Add Coin(s). Then scroll to the bottom in the new window that opens and you will see "Click here to add new variety". Just type in the year and press return. You can then add any new info required for the coin you have just added. It's all in the manual which you shoud get with the trial version. Thanks, that works! Also now worked out how to add my foreign "pennies" Looks worth the money David

Downloaded the free trial I can add a coin and picture, but don't appear to be able to have a type not listed in Krause, So only one type of 1860 1d beaded border. Can have hollow neck 1911 1/2d but not the penny. Very frustrating, I'll have another play later David

My family variation on that was 'enough blue to make a sailor a pair of trousers'. Yes, we were told the sailor variant also - except it was 'mend' in both cases, not 'make' (perhaps it was a smaller patch of blue sky? ) My mother always said "It's going to be sunny if there's enough sky to make an Englishman's trousers" followed by "Bloody Englishmen". This was all in Welsh of course. She was North Wales I guess? As a Scouser we were always told that they were the "unfriendly lot" - mind you, putting up with scousers trailing through your country must be a bit irritating! Liverpool was never really an English town, before the great influx of Irish during the potato famine, it was known as "Little Wales beyond the Dee" Both sets of my grandparents were Welsh speaking Liverpool Welsh living in Walton. When I was a lad in Bootle, we had three churches with the notice boards in Welsh David :-)

The Paris mint did some nice 1 franc coins, reprising some of the classic designs from previous issues, for example the Dupre obverse from the 5 centimes an5 to an9, pretty damn well true to the original Be nice to see some of our classic designs reissued, but sadly I see coin design degenerating in the same way our stamps have (Machin definitives excepted) David

As someone who collects world copper and bronze, I find the Krause books invaluable. My set is a few years old now, so I just use the prices as an indicator of scarcity David
