  1. So we should all look out for a "narrow 3" 1903, representing the damaged normal 3 before the recut! David
  2. This 1903 penny however is not definitely not an open 3 as described D
  3. At least one will be out there somewhere, I would put money on it. It has happened with all other varieties (except for the obvious die number coins etc) and I am sure it will eventually happen with the 1903 open 3 so keep looking!!! this one just gone for £330!!!! Dread to think what one in decent grade would go for David
  4. loved this link But even better than the story, look at the Indy's URL ###http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/utter-PR-fiction-but-people-love-this-shit-so-fuck-it-lets-just-print-it-2269573.html### David
  5. There was one in the Crocker Collection 1908 BMC 2214. F 164A. Dies 1*+C. Near Fine, buckled. Rare Sold For: £500 a very ugly coin too!
  6. From Wikipedia Isle of Man During World War I the British government interned male citizens of the Central Powers, principally Germany, Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Turkey.[83] They were held mainly in internment camps at Knockaloe, close to Peel, and a smaller one near Douglas. During World War II, about 8,000 people were interned in Britain, many being held in the same camps at Knockaloe and Douglas on the Isle of Man. The internees included enemy aliens from the Axis Powers, principally Germany and Italy.[84] Initially, refugees who had fled from Germany were also included, as were suspected British Nazi sympathisers such as British Union of Fascists leader Oswald Mosley. The British government rounded up 74,000 German, Austrian and Italian aliens. Within 6 months the 112 alien tribunals had individually summoned and examined 64,000 aliens, and the vast majority were released, having been found to be "friendly aliens" (mostly Jews); examples include Hermann Bondi and Thomas Gold and later members of the Amadeus Quartet. British nationals were detained under Defence Regulation 18B. Eventually only 2,000 of the remainder were interned. Initially they were shipped overseas, but that was halted when a German U boat sank the SS Arandora Star in July 1940 with the loss of 800 internees, though this was not the first loss that had occurred. The last internees were released late in 1945, though many were released in 1942. In Britain, internees were housed in camps and prisons. Some camps had tents rather than buildings with internees sleeping directly on the ground. Men and women were separated and most contact with the outside world was denied. A number of prominent Britons including writer H. G. Wells campaigned against the internment of refugees. See also: Defence Regulation 18B
  7. Think it's Brabant (Spanish Netherlands) The IND doesn't refer to India, but the Indles ie the Americas David
  8. Make that 1) Decent photos of both sides of the coin with zoom facility 2) Always have the option of delivery available when Mrs davidrj is out shopping David
  9. Sounds good to me! An alternate theory I've had for some of these "1 working die only" varieties, is that they were made after the main run for domestic use, when a late application came in from one of the colonies, this could explain why some were rarer in UK circulation than may be expected David
  10. Can I add the 1967 pennies with 1) Stalk in helmet 2) Tidal wave next to lighthouse Never seen a photo of either David
  11. You only have to look at the shape of the 2 in a 1902 penny to see the 3/2 theory is total oblox! I'll post some high res pictures later nuff sed! David
  12. You only have to look at the shape of the 2 in a 1902 penny to see the 3/2 theory is total oblox! I'll post some high res pictures later
  13. Krause World Coins list the penny at $6 in F, $15 in VF, $35 in EF and $80 in UNC if they are genuine Not my area of expertise, but they are quite scarce, just 20,000 minted The 1/2d and the 6d are even rarer apparently, just 2,000 and 2,500 minted respectively Yours look to be at least EF grade, but a note of caution they could be modern copies, do you have any provenance? Hope this helps David
  14. Simple numbers from Court's article - I don't think this variety was recognized before the 1960's so none would have been cherry picked when new
  15. Here's mine GF?? never seen a photo of a higher grade Not a clogged die, definitely a different font David
  16. I upload my pictures to www.photobucket.com Once uploaded paste all of the "IMG code" link into your post here, you can use the "Preview Post" button below to see whether it has worked on not David
  17. To be pedantic, he said "Salute" = "Hello" David (vaguely remembering O level Latin)
  18. I was watching this and left a speculative $10 snipe. Could this be die number 1 ??? enlarging the seller's picture did not help. My snipe outbid before it was made $32.45 for a crap 1863, I wonder.................... David
  19. I'm still waiting for the 1920 penny, missing colon dot after IMP to be recognised for the valuable rarity that it is (although I do have 2 of them, so one ready to sell when it happens ) I've seen a couple of 1919KN with missing colon dots on ebay, but ropy pictures/condition didn't tempt me David
  20. My Krause had $200 for UNC, possibly low for this mintage Given the buouyency of the Russian antiquities market, $800 might be possible for one in TOP grade, but even allowing for US grading I wouldn't rate his coin as better than VF David
  21. not my area of expertise, but I've checked in Krause World Coin Catalog (2008 prices) Russia Y#58.2 0.9000 silver 9.998gm 50 kopek 1908 mintage 40,000 F $20, VF $40 hope this helps David
  22. the difference is minimal slight difference in the alignment of the N they appear to be about 50/50 in my small hoard of 1918 KN, but to be frank I soon got bored and haven't checked them all The "bird's foot" obverse flaw is scarce ?1/10, and appears to be paired with both reverse types David
  23. If I'd realised that, I'd have taken screenshots of the lot. I wanted to look at it again as well. Maybe Peck will be kind enough to upload again I've uploaded my copy to here David
  24. Damn. As for uploading it here, it's 11 MB !! Sadly that's a no-no. Does anyone know of another upload site I could try? try this one says up to 200MB David
