  1. Just for you Peck khazi and alternate terms David
  2. As a Liverpudlian I always thought Khazi was Scouse, but Wilipedia gives:- Lexicographer Eric Partridge derives khazi, also spelt karzy, kharsie or carzey, from a low Cockney word carsey originating in the late 19th century and meaning a privy.Carsey also referred to a den or brothel. It is presumably derived from the Italian casa for house, with the spelling influenced by its similar sound to khaki. Khazi is now most commonly used in the city of Liverpool in the UK, away from its cockney slang roots.[27] An alternative derivation is from Christopher Chippindale, who states that khazi derives from Army slang used by expatriate officers of the British Empire who took a dislike to the habits of, and steaming rain forest inhabited by, the Khasi people of the Khasia hills on the northern frontier of India. 3. For bun penny fans who haven't already got a copy - link David
  4. Just looked at all my dates for this period, and I've noticed the extra part linear circle on my 1883, in exactly the same place. Not on any of the others though. I don't think it's an error. If you switch back and forward from obverse to reverse images on that 1892 eBay example (above), it looks as if it must be ghosting of the base of Victoria's bust - which is quite a heavy raised design at that point. It is in exactly that place. It could be that ALL examples - especially if they are all in the same place - are ghosting not errors. I agree, occurs on more than one die type and spread over too many years to be a flaw Interesting though
  5. 1917 penny
  6. This one from Tony Clayton's site , the only others I could find were Coinsgb and here Google dried up after that: I wonder how many are out there? Court didn't find any in his big penny survey David PS Azda is warned not to follow the Tony Clayton link, it may prove too much for him
  7. $61 plus postage for my 1918KN penny Underbidder on quite few for more David
  8. Nb the 1922 (type 1927) reverse appears to have a shorter index finger too (from the 3 coins i can find illustrated) David
  9. 1927 to 1936 reverse has the shorter thumb (as does the "1927" 1922) Long thumb, almost touching St george's cross is the norm for 1911 to 1926 David
  10. Possibly Japanese silver, can you give me the weight, and I'll have a go Is this one coin or two? Bigger pictures would help David Can't find anything for certain in Kraus, their illustrations and yours show too little datail Could be something like these Suggest you try the British Museum or ask the folks at Oriental Coin Database
  11. Nice bog head! Wonder whether cargo was bullion or coin
  12. I'm confused too (nothing unusual there) The text refers to the limited edition proof, but this looks like a standard circulation £2 to me and PCGS would have added a P to the label surely? David
  13. Possibly Japanese silver, can you give me the weight, and I'll have a go Is this one coin or two? Bigger pictures would help David
  14. 1894 penny David
  15. Gouby lists the phenomenon for 1879, 1883, 1884, 1885 & 1886 Here's mine can't believe this is a die flaw, more likely metal flow similar to "ghosting" Anyone else got an example?
  16. Nice example of extra linear circle here , though I think it's overpriced Gouby list this anomaly for several dates, but without a reasonable explanation I have a couple similar, I'll post pictures later David
  17. Handy Roman date converter David
  18. ?? Dracott, not heard of this reference before David
  19. Interesting that Michael Gouby makes no attempt to catalogue date spacing prior to 1866 1866 seems to be the worst David
  20. I would grade the pennies as "CLEAR DATE" which is an adequate description, I can't see a date on the florin, so I'd grade that as "SCRAP" David
  21. The narrow dates in 1874, 1875, 1876, 1877, & 1879 are different dies to the normal wide dates of the same years. The most noticable difference being the narrow dates have a thinner lighthouse Date spacing appears to be variable over most of the bun (and the veiled head) series, and in general is random with respect to dies You need to get hold of a copy Michael Gouby's book for details of known combinations. Date spacing is regarded as insignificant by most collectors, but it's quite good fun to try and get the range for each date even with cheap very worn examples. For example I have 4 different 1871s (they are all crap though) David
  22. Bet it never gets as big as the British thread. Just a thought True, probably Scott and I mainly David
