  1. I have to ask, a day out in Finland, anything in particular Scott? Or a cheap flight? Sounds like you were on the same itinery I was on a fortnight ago Scott. Baltic cruise - Oslo,Copenhagen, Tallin, St Petersburg, Helsinki & Stockholm Got a very nice Maltese €0.50 in Helsinki, probably from someone on the same cruise in the same tourist shop! I'm interested to know what the mix is away from the holiday destinations. Looking for commemarative €2 coins would be more fun than our hunt for £2s
  2. For amusement only Chilli Sauce David
  3. How does a bronze penny get to this colour?? 1923 S.African penny
  4. A question for those who live in Euroland. 10 years on, how many coins have crossed national boundaries? I've found some nice ones in unexpected places, but then I only visit tourist hot spots where folk are spending cash from previous holidays Have, for example, German collectors carried out any surveys of what's currently in circulation? David
  5. This was the chap who also designed the infamous Lusitania medal Brilliant artist, but lacking in humanity in my view David
  6. Hideous! Nazi propaganda It isn't Nazi Prop David, its dated 1920, its a Freemasons medal, check the eye on the REV I stand corrected, but demonstrative of attitudes in Germany post WWI I thought I recognised the style - it's by Karl Goertz see Goertz medals K262 The Watch on the Rhine This medal was Goetz' protest for the arrival of black colonial French troops to occupy the Rhine territory. Most certainly a ploy by the French to humiliate the Germans, Goetz was obviously livid with the action. Here we see his vitriolic response over several 'reported' rapes and sexual excesses by these occupying troops. History now shows that these fears were unfounded and reports of rape were more exception than rule. This does not remove the fact that this 'infamous' iconography still overshadows Goetz' entire oeuvre. David

  11. Combination of saved searches with lots of exclusions, and sitting with laptop on my knee whilst Mrs RJ watches Eastenders etc Myibay Firefox addon allows unlimited snipes down to 3 seconds for free
  12. I take you point, but then auctions are a gamble for both buyer & seller, half the fun IMHO I think the majority of items that are correctly described and have a decent high res picture of both sides find their price for the popular ranges. For specialist areas, maybe Ebay is not the correct market place for sellers The real fun is finding an obscure variety in amongst the junk; 2 years ago I spotted a 1903 with open 3 penny listed at 45p, I sniped at £25, not my fault I was the sole bidder and got it for the starting price. If I had put a normal bid in for this it would have stood out amongst the other junk and possibly attracted others to look, as to why anyone was daft enough to bid Conversly I have sniped reasonable (to me) bids and been outbid enormously by other snipers
  13. Agreed! All my Ebay bids are snipes. I use the free Firefox addon. I put my maximum bid in and wait to see what happens Had some good results David
  14. Hi Az, Can you post a higher res picture of the E and Britannia's head? looks to be a similar dot on her cheek, so my gut reaction is crud/corrosion David
  15. If folk here think British prices are going over the top, look at the US $2M FOR 3 LINCOLN CENTS David
  16. Yes! Never been to this part of the world before, so should be interesting David
  17. Like those horrid German pfennigs
  18. Wow, just wow Double wow! David
  19. Never seen nor heard of that dot on trident 1922 before David Here's my 1922 Dot.... Thanks! I bet they are pretty impossible to spot in lower grades David
  20. I can see enough bronze colour showing through at the edges to make me 99% sure it's a bronze halfpenny that's been silvered post-issue. It's in a nice grade, so if the date is right, and the price is right, and it floats your boat, go for it! Don't fall for any "Rare" BS though. It should be priced LESS than the regular issue. I have two silver plated veil head pennies that look very similar. French 10c pieces 1898 to 1920 were commonly decorated with gold, silver and sometimes both 10c doré et argenté 1898 and still command a decent price. David
  21. How's this for confusion God knows what! David (off on holiday in the morning, be interesting to see what's in change in Baltic capitals)
  22. Thanks, interesting. I wonder if Michael's was an F80? Still looking for the F82 "cannonball" David
  23. Not sure I follow your logic here, David? The accepted wisdom on all the "dot" coins is a transient fault caused by a bit of grit in the works. Here we have the same dot on an obverse with two completely different reverse dies Do we resurrect old theories re die identication marks?? I'm off on holiday next week, but when I get back I'll send high res scans to Michael for his comments, this is a very puzzling coin David Interesting. The dot looks far too regular to be caused by grit. It's the same roundness as the 1897 'dot' which is supposed to be non-accidental. But whatever the cause, it has got onto the die and thus appears on more than one specimen. Does anyone know if the wide date and narrow date dies for 1875 were used concurrently? Gouby states one known for the wide date penny, this was seen 10 years ago. If the flawed die was around long enough to be used with two different reverse dies, why isn't this a common variety??? David

  25. I scan coins at 2400 dpi with a dark background, bronze comes out far too dark against the default white background of my scanner I use Photoscape to do the circular cropping, this is a freebie photoscape download Once I have images, cropped against a black back ground I use Photoshop to stich them together. Make a large black blank image, then paste the individual scanned images, flatten layers, then crop to shape One of those jobs thats very time consuming whilst on the learning curve, but I can now do the complete proces in about 25 minutes Hope this helps David
