  1. am I missing something obvious here? 1891 penny Gouby gives date widths of 14.5, 15 & 15.5 teeth, final "1" is over a tooth so probably teh common 15 teeth (BP1891Ab) £60?? David
  2. Rinse them in acetone followed by distilled water, PVC gunk will be removed, but this wont restore any damage to the surfaces, not usually a problem if the coins where retrieved from circulation. enjoy, and welcome to coin collecting! :-) David
  3. Agreed, but what is going on between the ribbon and Victoria's neck? Reverse die looks knackered - three cracks plus an impression next to the shield I thought it quite pretty but shocked at £31
  4. I got outbid on this one,1867 penny What do folk think is going on? a clashed die or overstrike on another coin?
  5. This one amused me 1860 error mistrike
  6. It's a Bulgarian 10 Stotinki, one year issue
  7. MERRY CHRISTMAS What did Santa bring you? I've got Michael Goulby's new book on Victoria bronze pennies.. time to start sifting through the junk box to see if I have anything interesting that I'd previously overlooked. David
  8. possibly something acid cleaned in the past now retoning
  9. both my 1869 have normal well aligned dates - this one jumped at me when I first saw it - a very odd coin - the 6 is strange to say the least and the 9 appeears to have lost its tail - I think both numerals have been replaced. now at £16 with 9 days to go, too expensive for me to satisfy my curiosity "On 24-Nov-09 at 16:42:44 GMT, seller added the following information: I have been informed that this coin could be a fogery as the 9 is to high in the date. Any bids may be retracted if you think this is the case. see close up photo of the date" went up tp £104 but now £77 interesting to see where it ends up Finished at £184.99 so obviously some folk liked it

  12. What do folk here think of this one 1869 penny? the date looks very odd to me
  13. Ditto the wartime 1918KN penny, probably the poorest quality striking of all the 20th C bronze coins, almost impossible to find better than fine, dye cracks and flaws ++, and weird colour ?low tin I've never seen one in better than Fine. Never seen a 1926ME in better than VF. I'd like to think unc examples exist somewhere. I have about 50 1918KN pennies, Two I would grade about fine with almost complete shield details, these two have a slightly higher rim than normal which has probably protected the design. Only seen better in photos. I only ever found one ME in circulation - good fine, which is still my only example
  14. No idea, I collect copper, try cgi.fr see if you can see something similar
  15. I'd say it was a douzain from about 1550 to 1600, similar to regal issues of Henri II, probably one of the many feudal (regional) issues,
  16. At least we were spared the Iron or zinc coinage suffered by much of Europe

  18. Likewise the open "3" 1903 penny gets noted, but the two quite distinct terminal "8"s for 1898 are ignored by most authors, I suspect rarity=investment rather than numismatic interest dictates price and catalogue inclusion
  19. The 6 looks a bit odd. or is it just the lighting?
  20. My interest was kindled by getting a GVF bun penny (can't remember date) on the 23 bus, stunned by the design I started collecting other bun pennies as they came my way. Growing up in Liverpool when it was still a thriving seaport, there was a lot of foreign stuff in circulation; Irish, Australian and S.African pennies etc, as well as the odd French bronze 10c and Argentinian 2cvos. Still collect all bronze pennies I remember occasionally seeing very worn Victoria halfcrowns and shillings, but silver coins ate far too much into my pocket money to keep
  21. I have one - GF pulled from circulation many years ago. I've never seen another, and its very hard to spot on a poor photo of a worn coin.
  22. I'm keeping a close eye on all 2008 coins that come my way, with 2 obverse and 2 reverse dies for all values, there is a possibility of other mules, though they wont be as dramatic as the 20p
  23. This one got me excited momentarilly!!!! George V facing right
  24. Nice shiny 2009 2p in change today from the corner shop (S.Manchester)
  25. It will make it something, I'm not sure it will be English as we know it Thanks all, translations pretty much as I worked out the gist, an appropriate post given this topic title " Three quid down the Swanee..." I'll just write this one off! I'll still keep buying from overseas sellers, I often get good stuff at reasonable prices, and I've had very little difficulty with either overseas payment or postage
