  1. I totally agree, our relatives across the pond seem to have an obsession with things packaged in plastic, which doesn't necessarily indicate good quality.
  2. Gaz, if you have a scanner that may be a better option for pictures. As coins are reasonably flat (normally) any scanner should be able to do a reasonably decent job of getting a good image. Really nice find btw.
  3. I have better I still wouldn't get graded. I'm puzzled by this.
  4. Hi Gaz, you'll find you aren't the only collector/detectorist (does that make us collectorists?) on here!
  5. Given the crudity, I might be tempted towards a contemporary forgery, however a penny would (at least today) seem somewhat unworthy of such effort.
  6. She certainly doesn't look very far off though
  7. Very true, but just when you start to think you know enough, someone else with more knowledge will perhaps direct you to further thought, leading back to the "where can I learn more about this..." Where better to begin the search for more knowledge, than the place you heard it first.
  8. Commonly asked questions and answers sticky threads in a newb/beginners section normally works quite well, but does involve the overhead of several admin members to maintain and update. Under-use of the forum search is a man's own worst enemy, second only to forgetfulness.
  9. In the late 60's I was only just being created.... A week or so ago, I introduced myself here after quite a lot(tm) of lurking I have many questions yet to be asked, but at the same time, I also find that the forum search is very helpful (and often sidetracks me into reading for hours on entirely unrelated but also very interesting things). There is so much knowledge and a huge amount of pictures on here, I think it would be nearly impossible to read everything in my remaining lifetime!
  10. https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?initiative_id=SB_20171020090558&site=glo&g=y&SearchText=napoleon+iii+5+franc&page=1 Gold would be gold all the way, no-one plates gold. Silver likewise would not be plated with a top-coat of non-precious metal. Platinum wouldn't be worth it for such a small coin, and white gold is a 20th century .. I want to say trend, but that doesn't seem like the right word.
  11. It's still plated. And by that I mean not gold or precious. My money, all $1.92 of it would be on aliexpress.com or similar.
  12. I thought it was a King on 1938/39 coinage
  13. Blimey, I have a whole pile of those rare ones....
  14. or realistically priced... 120 quid ofr a box with a 50p in, eeerm... it wouldn't be so bad imho, if they didn;t paint the coins after finishing them to "highest proof standard". It seems a little pointless,
  15. How about one that you can add pages to as needed?
  16. That is a nice collection, and I agree - the RM do seem to be cheaping out on the quality of presentation these days, mlking every last drop of profit from their sales with flimsy cars and cheap plastic abound.
  17. Jeez man, i definitaley don't get out enough. 103 hammies off one field though, thats about 90 more than my lifetimes count. In all fairness though, I've had plenty of romans instead
  18. Where do you detect, in a coin shop lol Can't wait for the maize to come off my Hammered bank...
  19. Nice set, i unfortunately didn't have the cash to go with the foresight when these were at a reasonable price. Given all the recent media hype, I can imagine these will probably do remarkably well now
  20. Referalls in the interweb insdustry are "where was that person when they clicked a link" .. google normally features very highly on the reports these days, but back when the internet was new MSN or Yahoo etc also had a good showing. I guess facebook is now looged as they're starting to have a lot more sponsored ads, so traffic referalls will be monitored, as once they get figures they can convince other advertisers/businesses to spend $$ on FB sponsered ads. Probably a whole lot more mundane than you needed to read, but this would indeed be a result of what mrbadexample describes.
  21. I think he should've stopped typing after "I know very little about this coin". Anyway, must dash - I need to go and post about £9,000 worth of Georgian and Victorian "Worn 22ct coins" on fleabay
  22. simples ... google "Gimp how to use layers" and then "gimp how to change opacity in layers" . 2 sets of easy to follow steps, and hurrah, you are now an image editing god!
  23. I'd wait til he sells something and do tha same back via a "mate" account...
  24. and .. (note to self, make em smaller..)
