The Value of Charity
Unwilling Numismatist replied to DrLarry's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
I would just love to add (as I skipped a billion words in this topic) that 5 of my closest numismatically accomplished friends are female. While this forum may currently be a "mans' shed" mentality, it would be very nice if it could be far more inclusive, as many newer collectors are from a much more diverse society than us old dinosaurs, and they will be the ones who continue our great hobby. I say the above but I have barely broken 50, so I don't feel old, but I know that the baton must be passed, so that all of my collecting will not be in vain or become worthless. On another note I do however agree that daytime TV adverts can be somewhat repetetive and overbearing, but do not wish to be branded because I have seen them many times and feel that some times you can be exposed to something a little too much. Everyone should, in a free society, have the right to free speech, and alongside that, everyone who enjoys a service provided free by someone else with a vested interest should hopefully respect that freedom wisely. To everyone, Peace, love and happy collecting.- 46 replies

Best Decimal Coins to collect - thanks, Chris

I concur, as for mintage figures I thik the RM gave a figure which included all the commemoratives for that year, rather than breaking it down. The 2017 shield definitely exists in the year set, but whether many more were actually minted it's hard to tell. I haven't found any in change, but then it's literally only this week that other 2017 50p's have started circulating - there were 4 more Beatrix Potter coins along with Isaac Newton. The don't currently show any mintage for Royal Shield for 2017, but now have the figures for all others for 2017 up Mintage Figures. -

I think good hardware with a consistent setup will do far more than a good post-processing package. Polishing turds can be rewarding, but having something better to start with will always win! -

If everyone around you starts saying "man" and getting hungry, you'll know someones weed plantation on fire On a more sinister note, I wonder if the extensive burning will reveal anything of the Moors Murders victim locations. -

I'll be glad if they win, not worried if they scuff a knee, or get a little bruise as the way they roll about after having a touch is laughable. -

Take a look at modern (prior to the Shield) 50p's for a little teaser, Britannia (albeit reclined) and her Lion friend featured on those until 2008, so I would say you're actually onto something. The designs do morph over time but had to start somewhere - perhaps even as far back as Victoria and the 5 pounds "Una and the Lion".

I don't spend that much and I still make sure I don't get hoodwinked. Maybe that old saying is true. "More money than sense".

I'm not so sure, but I can't put my finger on why. I guess it's the divvy in me. Aliexpress do stock some extremely good repros though. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Bi-metallic-2015-2-POUND-The-Final-Issue-IRB-RARE-Replica-UK-commemorative-coin/32312450153.html -

I agree it looks a little odd, but that said, the detail looks very good on the coin which in my experience isn't usually the case with fakes. Under the Queen's head it should have IRB (or less likely for 2015, JC). The Edge inscription should be "Standing on the shoulders of giants", and should be centred well, not offset to either side. The reverse of this coin should have all cogs well formed and detailed. In forgeries, the cogs appear somewhat more rounded and less defined, and the design in the centre circle is normally far less detailed than that displayed by the genuine coin. The forgeries dated 2015 are considerably better than their earlier counterparts, and actually get much closer to the correct weight, so weighing it possibly wont help. Seeing decent resolution images of obverse, reverse and edge inscription would definitely be better than a video. -
Paddington 50p

The Royal Mint says the coins won't be released into circulation, and to get your hands on one will cost £10. You can buy them direct from the Mint. Whoopee, another worthless piece of metal being touted as a coin. -
