I picked up a wine glass a while back from a charity shop for 50p because I liked the simple design and it was a sensible size. A visitor at Christmas told me it was actually a Georgian rummer, and worth a lot more than 50p. I still use it for my constitutional home made wine every evening.

For those interested in threepences, groats and Maundy sets, Baldwin's of St James's are currently auctioning the Portland Collection. Some lovely coins, mostly NGC graded.

Bull / ESC have this listed as R2, which doesn't seem to be reflected in Spink or realised sale prices. Probably an error? Anyway, here's my only example, not particularly high grade.

Meant to say I got this 1909 dot penny a few months back, and completely forgot about it. Just £4.64 off e bay. I know they're not that rare, but this one is about VF, and the price was a bargain.

Yes, Peck's advice is good. I don't collect Roman coins, but I do deal a bit at markets in the local area. I find Roman coins in good grades much easier to obtain than most of the hammered English. A collection based on as many Roman emperors as you can get, is a good target. Don't forget the wives/daughters/mothers, who also appear on quite a few coins. You will find, a bit like English hammered, that you can get the majority of the names fairly quickly, but then it gets hard filling the last few. Some emperors were only around for a few months, or only held sway in a small part of the empire, and those can be tricky and expensive. When you get down to the likes of Galba, Otho, Vitellus in the early days, or Carausius, Allectus and Marius in the later days, you will find your budget being tested more!

Thanks Pekris, some really useful information. I was planning on concentrating on denarii and antoniniani for different emperors, similar to the full set of English monarchs silver coins since William I I have put together over time. It’s reassuring to know that the risk of fakes is low for Roman silver and I’ve got an ok level of experience for hammered coins in general. I’ve been really surprised by the prices after spending significant sums on the rarer medieval monarchs. Thanks very much again! Dan.

The original ESC listed them as S which seems about right. Here's my example that sold recently.

That is quite a beast! The pictures of the crane used to get it out of it's old home brings home quite what a task it would be to install.

Thank you for your feedback.... That was my opinion too... Too low grade to be sure, however looking more like a G than a C.. and Unable to rule the possibility out.. For the moment it will fill the box, at least until I can find an affordable definite specimen...

Just this one in - I find these engraved portrait coins interesting, though it seems a shame that a rather nice 1882H Penny got adulterated in the process!

I suspect that ‘Gentleman’s Choice’ , capitalised, refers to a named collection created by some individual who otherwise wishes to remain anonymous, a bit like the ‘North Yorkshire Moors’ collection recently sold at auction.
