Think zookeperz has now covered much of what I have just typed, but here goes anyway! I believe this is a Gouby Date Style A http://www.michael-coins.co.uk/cp_1858.htm Pictures of one of my own examples attached; think exact same dies, noting the following:- · Same die flaw to front of truncation, looks to be a bit more developed on your piece · Same die flaw as your piece (highlighted with red arrows) around the T of VICTORIA · Not pictured, but my example also has an additional obverse flaw running through the base of the TIA of GRATIA, same as on your own coin · Same very close REG colon position, note G repaired · Same N’s of BRITANNIAR, particularly noting the clumsy 2nd N repair · Date has small additional piece to inner bottom loop of the 1st numeral 8 (again highlighted with arrow) · 8’s seem a little ‘pointed’ at top left of top loop (again highlighted), yours may have an additional mark which I think has suggested to Pete it may be an overdate……...which I don’t think it will be! Not a particularly rare variety in my opinion, colons on the Victorian copper penny series are all over the place!

Hi, I am new to this forum but it would be nice to get some help. I own this 1860 penny in just about unc condition. I realize that there were many varieties of this coin. I believe mine is a toothed border but not entirely sure now as some look beaded. Also the "I" in BRITT is out of line and there appears to be a few letters double struck. I know there are some experts out there so any help would be gratefully received regards variety, value, rarity etc...Thanks in anticipation..Thanks in anticipation.

There are more varieties of 1858 than possibly all other copper pennies put together. It was all down to the delays involved introducing the bronze with which the Mint had major problems. So they used and reused the 1858s. Then the delays continued so they had the 1859, finally the very rare 1860 just before the bronzes were ready.

At a guess, 10 to 30 quid if genuine as it's a bit battered. The lack of Monarch might be an issue unless already known without this.

Looks like it could be struck out of collar? Not sure how popular error coins are in the UK but here in Australia you could sell it for tens of dollars at least. Nice find anyway - normally the mint should pick this up, or at worst a security company's rolling machine should reject it - they don't often get to circulation.

In his paper "Flans for Newark Siege Coins", for example, he examined 35 nine-pences for 1646, eight were cut from a gilt plate and four of these had rim markings. Do you have access to this article? I had a chat with my local Computer expert and it seems we have Google to blame, not Ebay. All the ad space on Ebay is handled by Google Adsense and Ebay have no control over what appears there. Adsense is the system that detects your browser history and tries to put up ads relevant to you. Often you get caught out clicking on an apparently empty area of screen and trigger the Ad that is still loading to that space - hence a pop-up or redirect to another webpage. Google do very little checking on who rents space through them, so it may be a genuine and innocuous ad, or, in the worst case, a site that is attempting to install malware on your computer. Hence why it is insane to go on the web without good antivirus and anti malware installed. Adguard and similar things will block 90% or more, but nothing is fool proof. Perversely you will get les ads if you use Google Chrome instead of Microsoft IE as your browser - not sure if this is because Chrome is better at detecting malware sites, or if Google is deliberately down-rating the IE experience... It's a jungle out there!

Many examples of one of the two known die pairings of F32 occur with flans that become slightly concave/convex after striking. This is probably the reason that this die design was not adopted again. This is the cause of more wear to the centre of the reverse.

Hope he recovers soon and his sight is not permanently affected.
