I bought a few coins from the Ingrams in the early 2010's but then had two bad experiences from them: twice they had mis-described the scarcer varieties I expected to be buying, and ended up sending me normal, common coins. OK, they took them back without any quibble BUT they did not refund my expenses of posting the wrong coins back by signed-for delivery, leaving me a few quid out of pocket for THEIR MISTAKES. Once could have been put down to an error, but twice shows it was deliberate on their part to eke a few more quid out of their customers. Needless to say, I have not ordered again from them in the last 5 years, nor do I ever expect to again. They also massively overgrade and, now, overprice their coins. If you read these posts, Messrs Ingram, perhaps you will understand that business is a two-way process.

I don't see anything wrong with the above. The guy is in business and a business is supposed to make a profit. Your memories are not his problem. There is a programme on TV called Pawn Stars where this pawn shop buys stuff from people. The number of individuals who don't seem to understand that the shop had to pay overheads such as rent, utilities and wages as well as providing a living for its owners and, as a result, cannot pay retail prices is amazing. When I was in business and clients were haggling over rates, I would sometimes respond that we were not a charity. I don't have a problem with a business pointing this out to potential sellers. It has the merit of clarity.

Ok- you buy a coin you like. When you want to look at it, you look at it. It may be worth more than you paid for it, maybe not. Maybe you just like having it. Sometimes, of course, the finding was more fun than the owning..... Maybe you'll sell it one day. The new owner can see it, and decide what to pay for it. Like you did....... Now, will anyone please tell me why you want someone else to look at it for a ridiculous fee? And charge you to look at a picture of it on line???????? Emperor's new clothes. A ridiculous system preying on people's insecurities. I will NEVER have something slabbed. Ever. If the system was PERFECT, it would still be pointless.....

That's a well argued piece worthy of merit and further consideration. The only downside is the way people habitually read lists, expecting a date run to be in numerical order, so a change in mindset would be required.

Reverse wear to bottom rims of English and Scottish shields including the mace between them. Maybe this can be put down to a light strike but wasn't the ME and new design supposed to stop this? In any case IMO a poorly struck coin shouldn't achieve MS65 grading..Then there's the price starting price of $US 430 ! IMO this coin should be graded at around AU 58 and priced under $US 50.I think all TPGs have a long way to go in achieving the consistent results that collectors and investors require.

The thing is I don't even think the vendor is trying to be untruthful, I just think he is being stupid, a bit like the person who slabbed the coin in the first place.

I've seen far nicer coins unslabbed than the "better" slabbed versions, time and again. You only have to look at the "acquisition of the week" thread here to see that slabbing is totally pointless and unnecessary ... with the exception of say the elusive Churchill satin and other mythical beasts, where a professional opinion/grading/slabbing might ensure continued recognition of said coin.

I went to a good school- it was approved..... It was rough, though- the only one in our area with it's own Coroner...

Diemakers are known to drill a hole at the end of a crack in a die, to stop the crack (sometimes only temporarily) to allow the continued use of a die. This is mostly done on forging dies, but maybe on finish quality dies also. (?)

Gouby Thanks to everyone for their input Hello Frankie, There are several penny that have been found with raised flaws , like spots, commas, etc. They are all a result of a bit of dirt, etc. getting on the die and being transferred onto the coin it was striking. 1874, 1897, 1909, 1946 etc. They are of interest to some collectors. Is it worth keeping – yes why not !

I think the odds of receiving the pictured coin are about the same as receiving a penny farthing bicycle.
