  1. A question for my learned friends on here. I recently picked up a nice example of this coin, which fills a long-standing gap in my collection. In the seller's description, and in other examples of threepences I have seen for sale of this date, they are advertised as Maundy. But, while I now have 2 very nice Maundy sets, I do not collect Maundy oddments, I bought it on the basis that it can't be - according to Spink, the first GIII Maundy set was 1763, so not only must my 1762 3d be a circulation coin, but it is also the only silver denomination to be issued in 1762, and the first for that reign. Is that right?

  2. Metho is ethanol plus a small amount of methanol plus sometimes purple dye. Surgical sprit is similar without dye. While acetone is an aromatic ketone and is the smell on your breath when drinking alcohol. All are solvents that remove grease etc, and probably not a lot between them when cleaning coins.

  3. Ooosh. That's a difficult one. I would personally say that they're not much different really, but Roman fakes are less likely to occur due to the lower catalogue value? As always though, if you can find a good dealer that will go a long way towards putting your mind at rest. Cheers, Peck! I guess you know where I'm coming from however when we see major auctions AND TPGC's all offering fake coins! If it is a simple matter of ruling out the obvious inconsistencies of being hammered, plus appropriate devices/punches then maybe I'm in? I noticed Rob recently bought a nice bit of Roman, so I guess there's enough info on here to muddle 'safely' through it? (Screwed up face)
