  1. Today
  2. I dug up this coin today and did some research. Google said if the 3 has a defect it might be worth something. I think the 3 is it a slight slant and is lower than the other numbers. Comparing it to the other coins online it looks different but i’m not sure if that’s just cause it’s been in the ground for over 160 years. Any thoughts and opinions would be great, Thanks !
  3. As far as I can see from my old copies of Krause, all the centrally issued coinage in the name of Canada has been decimal. The earliest seem to be around 1858, although the Dominion coinage starts in 1870. There were some halfpenny and penny token issues in some of the provinces during the 19th century and even some in the denomination of "sou" derived from the French.
  4. Comparing it to my pair of 1844 crowns I'd say that's the top part of a cinqfoil. The star is larger and goes almost to trhe top of the N and I whereas the cinqfoil is smaller and goes about halfway up the letters.
  5. Without googling, I think it was from the beginning of the unified Canadian currency, c.1860s.
  6. Hello Paddy, quite right, I managed to find this on the web that someone else was looking into, a useful picture of the difference between the Cinquefoil and the Star 👍
  7. aha, there's a trace of what may be Cinquefoil ? its the best image I can obtain with all the other dings included in the photo.
  8. I've just picked up a Canadian 1 cent piece dated 1917. When did Canada go decimal?
  9. I have just found and ordered books on Netherlands and French coins because of running into that the problems with the online sources not always agreeing. Also ordered a 1927 Wreath Crown and that's setting be back almost as much as the 1898 Netherlands 2 1/2 Gulden without dot in "P Pander". The 1858 XF florin and 1927 proof florin were cheap by comparison! Def cut's back this weeks beers. 🤣

  11. I had not heard this determining key before. Thank you.
  12. That cud or w/e has to be worth at least £500 all on its own.
  13. Ebay won't even take down fakes, anymore. I still try, but have had zero success for several years.
  14. Clearly not fully au fait when it comes to numismatic knowledge. Why point out a heart shaped pinprick hole, probably due to a bubble in the flan or a rust spot on the die, when there's a bleedin' obvious die flaw covering the first W on the truncation (or is it a naval cannon mint mark?). I think we should be told. Maybe somebody would like to suggest the mint mark to her and sit back to see what transpires.
  15. Fortunately with his (or her - Linda??) outrageous prices, most people are fly enough to not fall for such bull, but I do see this one has sold: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/358558956337?itmmeta=01KS30XZG90WV7QVHWDYHQTRTW&hash=item537bc77b31:g:74IAAeSwAllqBx9t Obviously, post mint damage. Part of me thinks if some idiot has £500 to throw away on this sort of rubbish, more fool them, but I do take the point that naive people might get burnt. Don' know what the solution is. Ebay aren't ever interested in reporting items like these...
  16. This guy is flooding Ebay with spurious claims of "mint errors" on pennies - is there no way of stopping pr*ts like this ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/358573465246?itmmeta=01KS2ZEPCZ3BQX2HE1YJJHDD10&hash=item537ca4de9e:g:QvAAAeSwrmVqDK5q&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAAA4GfYFPkwiKCW4ZNSs2u11xDF7DyabZ4AGLot8%2FojbB73V2nPfs0S1D9cmT2nf7JgYxvoQ5VSqT8C2wwMWfic1z4VtgvhpJ9sjwqv4sOHcVhJM83piKWybOUgm39aotAzEhkq1jEcShhASx9yEcSEOummOpRJhtt9XxNB8326Diqagv0fXMiBWyGJI67%2FPPx3sbwg724jQlwjHbynd%2FbtfEHtTD1drdtlro6uS2MuDnhE7MXglt2Lq1OI3OnN93oePq8xaMZGqap9Llvvc2P6HPBIREPgViBuXeBTqs7k4uCA|tkp%3ABk9SR-Lmut_IZw
  17. Is the stop after TUTAMEN any clearer?
  18. 🤣errrmmm as for the book I hadn't been out of hospital that long when I decided to start with the forum and get the coin situation in my life sorted , it wasn't something id seen before an unable to see if it would be of use to me...its proven to be a useful tool, and I will endeavour to find a better copy, I cant fault the 2009 copy for the £4 it cost... not sure were you'd buy a lunchtime beer with a snack from at this price...? besides I've not had a drink of beer in years.... tablets, health, etc etc etc, 👍
  19. Ahhhh,.... this is good as the photos get with worn crown... apologise for the poor quality of the photos and the coins that I seem to been a magnet to.....
  20. That's the man. Splash out on literature. Spend 3 beers worth on a book instead of 1. As an aside and not referencing you as a subject, it never ceases to amaze me how many people consider spending as much as a lunchtime beer with a snack on literature is viewed as excessive and wasted money, when what they spend on coins has several zeros added to the same amount. It seems weird to me that people frequently won't buy the required tools to give them the knowledge required to increase their collection value, which is what they are trying to achieve. Bizarre. Not everything is on the internet, and that which is, is becoming increasingly untrustworthy. Everybody needs to tread more carefully than they used to with AI. A potentially useful tool that you can be guarantee to be abused.
  21. now that's interesting, I will see if I can get any further detail from the rubbed one thats a 1844, my spink book was a entry level purchase whilst I was starting to get things sorted....its a 2009 version...and was cheap, 👍I will indeed look for a newer version, all the very best "H"
  22. Last week
  23. Its hard to know what to say with a 1849 penny
  24. Charles II farthings in that sort of condition are well sort after the halfpennies are even scarcer
  25. I see someone has bought it.
  26. First and third are definitely cinquefoil. I can't make out what is going on with the middle image. Coins of England (the Spink book previously) has a good image of both stops - page 511 in my 2024 edition. Note also that for a long time a star stops version of 1845 was listed, but this has now been debunked and it is not listed in the more recent books. Star stops only occur on 1844 Crowns.
  27. Looking into when the first Victorian Crown was minted and in circulation got to wondering about... cinquefoil and star on edges If by chance would anyone have images of the star version I believe x 2 of mine are cinquefoil, 1 x ? its rubbed so why Im asking for a comparison. any comments on the crowns I have showing greatly appreciated. 👍
  28. Plenty of silver types, of which I am looking for a specific one. Without trying to state the obvious, it has cast copy 'written' all over it in the form of casting pits. Even if it was genuine, desirable it ain't.
