New Year, what new coin would you most like?

Recommended Posts

So, what are your numismatic hopes and dreams for the new year?

For me, it's numismatically nothing out of this world, but I'm specifically after a high grade young vic half crown, a gothic florin and "a Briot"!

Wishing you and yours a good one!

I was after a Charles I milled Briot for ages, lovely coins, prefer milled 2nd issue eye appeal wise I think.

I'll be trying to get some decent Charles II silver (I've struggled to find decent grade half-crowns and crowns that don't break the bank, and one day I will nab elephants and plumes!), and extending my hammered a little.

All the very best!

Like this one although it is 1st milled issue?

For myself, I would like a nice 1863 sixpence and a nicer 1848 sixpence. That would fill a couple of holes.

There are loads of gaps that need filling in all denominations, but one specific very basic mundane, ordinary but difficult to find variety would be nice, and that is a 1965 sixpence with the 'I' of 'REGINA' to a gap. You wouldn't believe how difficult to find this type is. I've got both types of 1964 but not 1965, and I have been looking for about 15 years, so this would be nice to find in 2016. And very likely inexpensive - I'm a very cheap tart to run. No gothics or Una and the Lions for me.

Happy New year to all. My big wish for this year is the 1911 Gouby X penny and possibly the 1903 open 3. Other than the dream factor just a few nice Edward VII pennies I am after and 1940 SE penny in good nick.

I have 35 1965 sixpences in a bag somewhere. I will have a look through them and, if I have more than one, will be happy to share.

The gold half pound of Elizabeth with bust 3C always did, and still does, float my boat in high grade!

Do they exist for sure?

Anyway, I'll be happy if I get to the end of the year with more gaps filled and a few more books on the shelf.

Just upgrades would be fine for me ... all Chas  Tower shillings of course.  And selling on the spares without making a loss would be nice too!

Yes, I would like a Briot sixpence... a very lovely coin indeed! I would like an Edward VI sixpence in my collection this year too! One with a fab portrait.

LOL  An upgrade is on the wants list Dave, but quite low down I'm afraid!

I've quite a few others I'd like to find first.  Trouble is, the ones I like tend to be owned by other collectors, so I need to improve both my bank balance and powers of persuasion!

Well there is also this on sale http://www.baldwin.co.uk/coins/great-britain/groats/extremely-rare-groat-of-edward-i.html?usrc=1 that is also less expensive ..

That's only less expensive because it's almost in 2 pieces. Check the line running right through the centre of the coin from the strike split. I can imagine someone buying that and it arriving in 2 pieces:P

I'd be grateful if you would, but I suspect you'll not find one, let alone two. The basic problem is that the 1965 sixpence is hardly a commercial coin, so a dealer will sell one in EF upwards for likely a pound or so, and be grateful he or she has got rid of one from their stock. The scarcer variety requires quite a bit of effort to look through their stock to find one, but even if they do, what's the market for it? A relatively few sixpence specialist collectors. As for price well it may have a premium over the normal type, but demand almost certainly means the premium will be small, say a fiver at best. I'm guessing, therefore, that dealers simply don't bother. One dealer local to me suggested that I shouldn't bother myself, so I'm guessing he wasn't interested either.

To the best of my knowledge, I've never seen a dealer's list show one, nor have I found one in a dealer's tray in the past when dealers had shops, nor has one appeared on eBay. All of this means that although they may be more common than they appear, there's no easy way to find one. I've been reduced to grubbing through pots of old sixpences at boot fairs, but still I've failed.

I was quite encouraged by the Catermole sixpence collection as that had one lot of QE II sixpences with two 1965s in it, and I naively thought my luck was in. No chance - they were both the same type, although why Mr Catermole wanted two sxpences of the same type with this common date in his collection I'm not sure.

So if anybody has one, I'd be very pleased to buy it from you.

I didn't find any in a bag of about 2000 E2 sixpences. Find one, and you will probably find another in the same place

Well, I checked all 35 of my 1965 sixpences and not a single one has the 'I' to gap. Sorry :(
