secret santa Posted May 28, 2025 Posted May 28, 2025 Yes, the bottom of the smaller 0 is level with the 1 but the larger 0 is below the 1. 1 Quote

copper123 Posted May 28, 2025 Posted May 28, 2025 well I had been after a really nice one for ages and it came up on the bay for a half reasonable price so i treated myself The two rarest coins in the copper / bronze victorian period are in my opinion 1851 d over sideways d and 1862 fat 8 this ties with freeman 530 as well for rarity. I have a fat 8 but it only grades good fine Quote

They were trying to eliminate the ghosting at this time , and its possibly premature ware affecting the reverse side on early types caused by the week low rim that brought about the change. ? Yes - the Edward obverse was flatter and didn't cause ghosting to the same extent; but the savage ghosting on 1911 and 1912 reverses must have caused them to redesign. Quote

I have a fat 8 but it only grades good fine I'll need to have for look at a picture of the 1851 d over d sideways (have an E over E sideways on a Half Farthing but not seen a D over D ) Think I might have the fat 8. Have a T over T (from Britt) on the way (all being well) And my most unusual so far would be my 1892, "possible" 2 next to 2 in the date. I would need to find another better example to confirm, not seen another so far, but then again its only been just over a year. Very Best Regards Quote
alfnail Posted May 29, 2025 Posted May 29, 2025 Shall we set up a 'More Farthings' thread!? Here is a penny which I found last week:- 3 Quote

I feel - the "More Pennies" (and I know Pennies are of greater interest than Farthings and Half Pennies to many) thread has been somewhat side tracked with (really interesting) non Penny posts ! 5 minutes ago, terrysoldpennies said: I'll need to have for look at a picture of the 1851 d over d sideways (have an E over E sideways on a Half Farthing but not seen a D over D ) Many thanks for sharing Terry, what a super error to find - very impressed ! Obviously someone missed the large sign hanging outside ... "Her Majesty Queen Victoria" Should have gone to Olde World Specsavers ! Very Best Regards Quote

dmw2602 Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 Compared both of my 1866s yesterday, and they seem to have the same dot near the C, is that unusual? Thanks in advance. Quote
jelida Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 Very common - in fact ‘normal’ on obverse 6 pennies in better condition, must have been present on at least one master die. It was likely featured on a ‘C’ punch used in die preparation, size /depth a little variable with the strike. Jerry 1 Quote
The Bee Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 Hi, Arrived earlier today 1860 Penny Which I think this is a circulated BP 1860 Nf (F + d) I can see part of the upper T in the linear circle and the remains of a foot sticking out in the RHS of the leg of the T. The C has been doubled and the O repaired Best Regards 1 Quote
The Bee Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 Hi and here are three more images from the obverse I cleared as best I can the gunk out of the B in Britt , but there is something behind it ? The R in Britt is also a bit off and (more usually) repair on the first T and G in D G along with doubling on the D Great to get your thoughts ! Best Regards Quote
Martinminerva Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 Just standard worn dies and partial letter repairs that has cropped up in many threads on here over the last few weeks, I'm afraid. Very common in the Victoria series and though interesting, not really worth any great premium... 1 Quote
secret santa Posted June 10, 2025 Posted June 10, 2025 Anyone spot the 1844 DFF penny at Noonans today ? Quote

Still pleased with it and I'll need to keep an eye out for an affordable T over T, in better condition it (per the picture in the Bronze Penny) Having prodded the B in britt with a wooden cocktail stick to dislodge the gunk its looking "normal" (there is a repair at the back of the downstroke). Similarly there is / was something under the R though, possibly part of another R. I don't think I'll resort to clamping it in a workbench and using a car wash pressure spray to completely clean it (as a You Tuber recently demonstrated on George VI pennies) Very Best Regards Quote

Oh....since i used to be outbidded at Noonans, i didn't pay too much attention to the auction. But i had a brief look that lot before and thought if the 44 penny was cleaned...not noticed the DFF😪 Edited June 11, 2025 by Bruce Quote
