St James's use Baldwin's for their auctions. I've always received invoices from them by post and they are not the quickest by any stretch.

Nothing for me at St James/Baldwins, but I did win a lot at Heritage over the weekend. Not the stunning 1869 penny though, unfortunately, but an 1805 proof penny..

I managed to get Edward VI & Aberystywth-Furnace groats. Also still awaiting invoice - looking back in my records, the last invoice I had from them in 2010 was dated 5 days after the auction (& presumably took another couple of days to arrive) - so a week's probably standard. (Have already got my coin from the Spink auction 2 days later!)

Speaking of the 1869 penny, and not to pirate the thread, but what do readers think of the price at near 10k USD?

Seemed a bit high, but that was a nice piece and after the shock (at least to me) of the DNW Vicky prices - esp. silver maybe it was not so high. I just could not get myself to put in that last bid but I think another bidder would have caused a rise in any case....

I have'nt seen the coin in question Vicky but perhaps people are taking Spink values as what should be paid when it seems quite clear that the choice british coinage are selling way above for what spinks thinks people should pay for coin X.

As has always been pointed out about Spink, it's merely a guide, the other thing that should be pointed out that we now know on the forum, is that choice coins are definately going to be fought over by top end buyers who have a large bank balance

I am not sure baldwins would have done any invoices yet because all the staff seemed to be at coinex on Friday and Saturday, I can only assume that is the reason??

Yes we did ok thank you, certainly worth our while going but in terms of the business we did - it could have just been a one day fair - we mainly did all our business on the Friday!!

There's a fair in Munich every February, Baldwins was here this year, dunno if it interests you for next year

That sounds interesting, is there much in the way of many Collectors who collect British coins??

English coins are popular in Germany and Europe wide. The fair is called numismata I think, and I believe it was the 1st weekend in Feburary and is generally quite busy. I got an 1850 shilling from there last year

Germany is one of the biggest export markets for UK based coin dealers but you'd have to sell an inordinate amount of coins to make a trip there economically viable, unless you combine it with a holiday I suppose. On the other hand leaving £xxxk of stock in the boot for a couple of weeks is not for the faint-hearted. Think I'll stay home...

I usually take a fair amount of cash at the Midland but when you take into account travelling, table fee, general buggeration it often ends up quite marginal. Some of the dealers I speak to who are regulars just use it as a flag waving exercise and forget about the economics, so I suppose I've been lucky.

My appearances at the Midland have been a little sporadic of late what with daughter getting married and my anticipating sticky matress syndrome in advance! It's only a hundred and something miles away but it always feels a lot more in the ridiculously early hours of a Sunday morning...

Might actually make the October fair if my run of recent declinatures hasn't blotted my copybook.

It's only on for a weekend Derek and is always packed, just saying, as I'd rather buy british coins in the flesh than online, at least you get to know the dealers.

Not surprising. Heritage prices are usually high compared to prices in the UK. They had an auction yesterday in which I bid. But the prices went far higher than I was willing to pay so I got nothing.
