I suspect the last 1 was added as extra metal. Whether it was a piece forced into a machined hole and finished to the final shape, or less likely literally stuck on top I don't know. I'm saying this based on a 1905/4 that I have where the added 5 was the wrong shape and some of it has fallen off, so not a good job. The remains of the horizontal bar of the 4 can be seen in the loop of the 5. See below. Incidentally, they also b******d a perfectly good 1904.

A real waste - an EF coin that's been ruined :(

to me it is an 1874h there looks to be a clean area in the H spot

Good call scott - in that case it would have to be Reverse H due to the close numerals

Azda,

That guy is a joke. He does his own slabbing, and grades as he wishes. Obviously no one takes him seriously! He owns the slabbing service........

I have bought a few coins from him and I'm fully aware of his grading practices.

Bearing this in mind I have been more than happy with my purchases.

Ok, this has to be an ebay laugh, andy yes its my old friend. Soooooooooooo a coin slabbed by CGS graded as AU75 and Mr Platt is now selling as UNC, why? Well in his own words

This example has been officially slabbed by CGS as AU 75 although, upon closer inspection, we can see this coin has never been in circulation and has superb beautiful original mint lustre.

Now what i'd like to know is, CGS take a raw coin, they scope it, grade and slab it, so how the hell can he take a closer inspection when its in a slab, this man talks the biggest lot of pish (thats Scottish by the way) since Bill Clinton said he didn't have sexual relations with Monica Lewinski, anyhoo, here's the link.

I think the grading company has it closer to right, with the grade of AU. The most interesting thing about this coin is how far to the left the mintmark "H" is...it almost touches the first 8, and is definitaly (sp) off center to the left!

that is interesting, i got a worn example of an 1881 h recently, i am looking at itbeing H over misaligned H but as yet cant make out either way.

Yet another new grade, do the Americans just make these up as they go along? WTF is BU++ Is'nt BU BU end of?

http://cgi.ebay.co.u...=item3f0b02d231

Would that be like an A+++ seller !!!

I'm not sure if it was American or what, but I did see a coin recently advertised as "About GVF+" :D

In the above case that grade most likely means you had best look elsewhere. On a more serious note, American grading firms assign 11 grades of mint state from MS-60 to MS-70. More recently "plus" grades have been added. It is probably only a matter of time before we'll be seeing grades with decimal points.

But how can you get better than BU? Oh wait, add a plus lol

It appears that he thinks that Spink know nothing about grading either. He is currently selling on eBay three halfcrowns (1820, 1877 and 1878) from the Spink auction last week. Spink graded them as "near EF" or "about EF", but amazingly they are all now "near UNC" or "virtually UNC".

Simple, subtract one full grade from his and bid accordingly.

Well he apparently knows more than CGS to, slabbed coin by them He Sold last week, according to him was better than the CGS attribution, even in a slab he can attribute it far better than CGS could with a raw coin.

He is an amazing man

Per the ebay description:

A rare victoria copper farthing dated 1860 in excellent condition, not to be confused with the later bronze edition of 1860. hence the toothed border.

I like this listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/931AD-KING-ERIC-The-Bloodaxe-SILVER-PENNY-COIN-UNC-/110714831690?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item19c71e434a . I particularly like how its a commemorative coin, in proof condition, and has historical information shamelessly copied and pasted from Wikipedia.

I think the seller would like the word 'commemorative' to be glossed over, otherwise why didn't he use the correct term "reproduction"?

I emailed the seller over the weekend politely pointing out the error of his ways.He replied yesterday with no text.

He has a reserve on it(min £50) so if it sells it will be to a novice...the joys of ebay.

5 centuries old?? I think a 5 crept infront of the actual price whilst typing?
