Glad to hear! ;)

non-genuine ?

The one Coinery/Paulus linked is genuine, just a very clipped sixpence.

Sorry, Garrett, missed your post! As HC said, a genuine 6d coin, but so heavily clipped as to be worthless, and now around the size of a 3d...hence the 3d reference! ;)

That's a neat trick - click the picture and an identical size picture opens in the usual window

Mind you, that's no different from the bleedin' Photofucket site, where the picture that loads is exactly the same size as the thumbnail you clicked on to take you there. So you click on the magnifying glass to zoom it (moaning all the while at why all these unnecessary steps compared to staying in predecimal). Then after you click the magnifying glass on the picture, a SAME SIZE picture opens in Photofucket's separate window. So you've gone through all that hassle to see 3 pictures, all exactly the same size.

Stuart

It is a pewter copy.

:D I think garret was referring to the link Paulus put up for me of a clipped 6d (no legend left whatsoever)?

Yes thanks Clive/Stuart. Was referring to the 'threepence'.

Thanks for answering !

Not the coin I'd buy but would be thrilled to bits to pull it out of the ground !

cheers

Garrett.

I don't mean anything by this, apart from astonishment at the price it is selling for, but at the end of the day, this is no longer a G3 Crown coin, rather a nicely engraved silver disc (with all due deference to Debbie!). Surely this sort of thing is open to modern reproduction?

I would'nt say 1841 was modern Paul but these love tokens are on the up, especially those with a story and researched. I think either the last DNW or Lockdales auction had several in, all sold for decent prices. There is collectors for these, just ask Debbie how much they've increased since she started collecting these.

Personally, I think the piece would have been more desirable with even a faint trace of the underlying design still visible. As it is, as Paulus says, it's just an engraved silver disc. How do they know it's GIII anyway?? (ETA: ah, the edge collar inscription is still there?)

Yes I agree, the prices have been on the up..... even so that crown is rather more than I would expect! I would question the engraving - the engraving looks a little too stylised and unlikely to be contemporary IMO. The coin seems to be a crown Peck as there is a photo of the reverse. There are some love tokens that have been engraved on non genuine coins.

Just for the record, I always prefer engraved coins that show the original coin too, with the exception of 18th Cent coppers which are usually smoothed both sides.

Here's one I got not long ago, has a lovely mix of the engraving and the original design..

Possibly a Queen Victoria memento? The top date is 1837 backwards (for some reason)

This surprises me. I've got some electrotype/counterfeit coins on ebay at the moment (after giving SEUK first refusal) and my electrotype Scottish 1582 40s in copper has gone a bit high (£235 just now, with about 6 hours to go). I've noted that I've incorrectly called it a 60s, but can't change it!

here:

I know that older electrotypes are collectable and I know what I paid for it about 10 years ago. £235 is more than I thought it would get to!

It's not one of you lot bidding to win and neg me for selling a fake coin is it?!
