There have been loads of quality auctions on ebay, but one that I did find very interesting was a kilo of gold, which sold for a few hundred quid, the dealer was from China, and again the pages were stright out of the Chard website. I wonder if the buyer ever received his kilo of gold. I have my doubts!!!!!!

After a very rare F169 1909 penny was listed (reached £820 in about fine condition) a number of 'hopefuls' have jumped on the bandwaggon. I was able to convince one seller that his coin was not the rare one.

I've sent a message to

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1909-penny-excessive...1QQcmdZViewItem

along the same lines

This one is pretty incredible, he can't even get the date right

' a rare oppertunity' indeed

I particularly like this one...

Charles shilling WoooEEE!

And I quote..

Please note that any scans/photos on this listing are of the actual item for sale, not a library photo.

Next is an E, next is an E......

His scans are horrible but the coins are not. I have bought two from him so far and his description has been spot on. Take a chance, you could get something cheap!

Could be a contemporary forgery in copper with that amount of verdigris

This is a coin I bought from him last week. Look at the scan on Ebay and below is the coin I recieved.

If I were him I would buy a new scanner.

The problem is not the pictures although admittedly they are dire, but being able to trust someone else's judgement and grading given it is impossible to identify any defects and hence sensibly value the piece. If in doubt leave it out is particularly pertinent to ebay listings.

I agree with you Rob but in this case I took a chance and it paid off. Obviously I would not be willing to take a chance if more money was involved.

I also bought this one1845 Farthing nEF

This one, although the grading was Ok did have defects. Small areas of verdigris, but at £7,99 was not a great loss.

Quite frankly, I don't understand it. On several occasions I have (politely) suggested to people that they would get more money for their ebay items if only their photos were better. For the most part I feel I am ignored.

Now forgive me for being avaricious, but quite frankly I am on a small budget. I only sell stuff on ebay to get money with which I can then buy more coins! I take time to make my listings presentable and my photos as accurate as I can. It still only takes me 30 minutes and if as a result I get a few more quid I think it's time well spent. I want my buyers to be happy and to feel I have got a reasonable price.

Now I think you have been very lucky Gary, but effectively this guy is almost giving things away! His 'kryptonite' coins are perhaps going to attract a few chancers but no real money, so why does he bother?

Damn right goodheart. Selling anything is about presentation, that's including the description and layout, but most important is always the image.

I took a chance with this guy (he was quoting grades given by known companies in the 70's...Farthing specialist etc)

Recieved today a lovely Unc toned 1898 6d for buttons :D ...which looked like the green godess on the scan.

You should realise, of course, that if he joins the forum and reads this your days of 'penny' farthings will be over!

The first time I came across him, his starting pices were 0,99, now he has increased the start price for his coins. Maybe he is starting to realise it can not go on like this. Hope so, for his sake.

I see he has changed the photo on one of his coins and it's actually pretty nice as everyone was saying - and a good price too (so far!)

Hopefully he'll start to see the benefits!

On top of the price, look at 'post & pack' price :o

OOh Wow!!!

"absolutely no damaging scratches or unsightly creases"!!!!

Lizzie shilling

And no irritating 'portrait' thing mucking up the front either....!

I have to concur, nearly all Elizabeth I hammered silver found buried have poor portrait detail, the reverse is almost always superior to the obverse, they are quite often clipped around the edges, common with most hammered silver.
