blakeyboy Posted November 18, 2022 Posted November 18, 2022 Fantastic, Mike. I love technology, but not all. Mind you, I would prefer to go to and from my workshop on the Titfield Thunderbolt... Quote

Mind you, I would prefer to go to and from my workshop on the Titfield Thunderbolt... Great film, shot in colour at a time when they were mostly black and white. One of my John Huntley videos, "Steam on 35mm 1" features some great railway out takes shot on the Camerton branch of the now closed "Somerset & Dorset joint railway" in June/July 1952 when the film was being made. Superb scenery. They really caught some decent Summer weather as well. Interestingly, the Camerton branch had already closed in 1951, but the tracks were not lifted until 1958, so it was possible to use them for filming, without interfering with main line schedules. 1 Quote
blakeyboy Posted November 18, 2022 Posted November 18, 2022 I looked up the location for the wonderful 'Oh Mr.Porter' ( 1936 ) and the platform edge is still in the ground.... Incidentally, I was on the last British Rail train on the Severn Valley line in 1962.... 1 Quote

Yep- silly old buffer was a bit derailed- he didn't have a loco motive- he wanted us to believe him, but he lacked a suitable platform. I haven't expressed myself well - maybe I need a coach. Sorry for blowing off steam- hope you didn't lose track of what I was trying to say. Don't shunt me out of the way- I like to feel people are siding with me.... I can only apologise.... 1 2 Quote

Indeed, Beeching got the job, but just didn't deliver the goods. His stock with the public was soon rolling downwards. In wrestling parlance so many would have liked to put him in a sleeper hold. Anything but a first class performance, and the long suffering public were railroaded into acceptance. Sadly he destroyed many lines in a permanent way. 1 2 Quote

It’ll be no good anyone having a choking child or a Cardiac Arrest in front of them and thinking the emergency services are going to help you! Edited January 6, 2023 by Coinery 2 Quote
