I keep getting outbid for a Victoria coin

Every time I find a decent Victoria penny coin on the bay I keep getting outbid but I cannot afford pay large amounts.

Same thing here although I am tending to move away from evilbay and buy from dealers that have been recommended to me.

You may pay a little more but you tend to get what you pay for regarding grades etc 

I have a spare 1901 if thats of interest as I have  just upgraded mine.

Have you tried not showing your hand until the last few seconds of the auction, then putting in a relatively high bid. If you win, the amount you pay will be slightly above the next highest bid - eg: a coin has several bidders and is worth about £75.00. The current high bid is £54. In the last few seconds you overbid at the absolute limit of what you can afford, in this instance let's say £100. You are the winner but only pay £58.00. Also In the last few seconds there was also another bid of £57.00. So you pay £1.00 above this figure.

It's worked many times for me.

If you are getting outbid then let it go and don't worry about it. eBay is good but it's not the only place to buy. I agree with Jon look at dealers and buy the best you can but don't think everything has to be UNC or better.

I always hold off until the last 30 seconds, then bid the maximum I'm willing to pay. You win some, you lose some, there's plenty of pennies around. Be patient and you'll get one at the right price.

I now snipe in the last 5 seconds.Before broadband I was kitted out with a stop watch,note pad,a stiff drink and made an allowance for getting squiffy as the night wore on. This was in the day when 95% of ebay coins weren't modern cupro nickel or worn Vicky tat.It used to be good fun.

I still get a buzz out of an auction. Also a last second sniper for two very good reasons: 

1. It doesn't give people time to react to my bid, and go higher

2. It doesn't give me time to react to an overbid, and up mine beyond what I am prepared to pay just because I'm a little belligerent. 

Number 2 is the most important. I got outbid yesterday on an 1802 Austrian 7 Kreuzer (I just wanted it for the unusual denomination). Just one bid on it until the last couple of seconds and I was pretty convinced my snipe would win. I was out-sniped and gutted, but if I'd had time to react it could have ended up very expensive.

The bids generally tend to reflect the value, what you are saying is you are getting outbid on your bid which is below the value of the coin. 

Some good suggestions above, perhaps look at some trusted dealer's stock?

The one thing everyone tends to forget is that it only takes two people to fancy a coin on flea bay and a bidding war starts - often with a high grade example its three ,four or five that are having a go .

Be realistic if you are on a budget , understand that the coin of YOUR dreams is also the coin of someone elses dreams , accept a lower grade and try and be happy with your lot .

Its not your fault you were not born into the royal family or the rothschild or hilton, getty etc

Dave, that's a snipe bid (there are websites you can go to where you enter your details and maximum bid and the program will run and make a bid in the very last seconds of the auction).

I am trying to collect a penny from Queen Victoria years before 1900 and now I know what is happening so I am being sniped if that is correct.

Go for somewhere between 1890-1894 (if you want the young head), they'll be some of the cheapest years if you just want one example.

It's true that you're being sniped Dave, but even if they didn't snipe and put a bid in with an hour to go, their bid would still have been higher than yours anyway.

I have missed about three 1890's coins in pretty good condition and I was just surprised to see the penny sell in the last second.

It is my intention is to build a small collection of Victoria and later George coins and now i have been finished from work try and see if i can volunteer in an elderly home or hospital (if they have me) and use the coins to show and talk about their experience of old money any happy times.

Good idea you have as well, I imagine it would be nice to reminisce. If you plan on handing out a few examples though, I would maybe grab some more worn pieces that you don't mind getting a few finger marks on!

I just want a small not to expensive collection that I can show and hopefully bring some good memories back and I can learn from their life's experiences.

I have already purchased Crowns, half Crown, double florin, florin, shilling, sixpence, threepence, half pence and a farthing so I am not far off complete for what I need.

I really hope a care home or hospital will let me volunteer when I am better myself and this is an idea I hope to happen even if it is an hour a week.

My late mum had Dementia and I know how important keeping someones mind occupied can be and as much as we tried it is hard for carers.

I may not get the chance to do it but if not it will not be for the want of trying.

I like anything old like steam engines that ran machinery and old pocket watches even though I don't collect them and if I look at an old pocket watch or coin I don't think about value I think about what it was used for and just let my imagination wander.

I didn't understand your first message . I mean when I read it the first thing that I thought was : it happens and surely will happen also in future , this is one of the problems of a platform like ebay ; and well me too I would like to buy some coins but are too expensive for my wallet and so I have to go to others coins .

P.S  Rebember that there are also some softwares that makes the offer for you at the last second .

I am also in the same position as you and as I said o have lost my job through sickness but luckily purchased my Victoria coins whilst working.

I just love the 1700 and 1800's history like how people lived and made the best of what they had and the industrial side like steam engines, buildings, pocket watches and of course coinage.

Don't know about being born into Hilton....but there is one I wouldn't mind having  go on.

Well I eventually won one for £7.50 but not exactly as good coin but at least people can see what it is.

The coin is coming from Germany and the seller said it had been in Sweden for about a 100 years although I cannot understand why.
