  1. It looks similar but there are differences. The inscription on the bottom of the box could be interpreted in two ways. Firstly, it could just be a note that records what took place. The coin was given to someone by L. C..Wyon. or It is as assumed, a note written in his hand. Personally I think the signature on the portrait doesn't match enough to prove conclusively
  2. Is he holding a cricket bat?
  3. There is some lovely toning going on there. I bet in the hand they look even better. If I had to choose one it would be the 3d
  4. Thats an awful lot of money to pay for a blank disc with some scratches on
  5. Mick I don't know a lot about Four Pence's but that looks like a good one, I particularly like the obverse. Did you do the photography?
  6. I like the sound of that. Maybe members could post examples of cleaned / dipped coins such as Matt's halo coin above and then take some of us less experiences collectors through what to look for.
  7. Maybe. I am always just amazed how these things are recognised. I would have said it looks okay, and its never easy telling from a picture what the real colour of a coin is. I am going to put it out there and make a point that I often see on here someone put a coin up for others to see and sometimes the reply comment is just "cleaned" or "dipped" with no further explanation. It would be good if the person replying gives a bit of a reason why. I enjoy learning from everyone on the forum, but I think it can put some people off from posting if things are explained rather than just cleaned or dipped.
  8. What indicates that it has been cleaned?

If you got it for free, then well done. From you photo I am going to say it's better than VF but your photo is a bit grainy to pick up the fine detail but it looks to be in good condition. I reckon it's worth about what you did not pay for it maybe even a little bit more.l

How much did you pay for it?
  11. There is some lovely venison down south already
  12. Plenty more coins in the ocean Pete.
  13. I would be happy with it. Nice colour, good fingers, no knocks and dents. A weak strike on the helmet and her left arm but not big money spent for a straightforward honest coin
  14. Thanks Pete I like the plan
  15. I'll have one Pete, if Paul O wants to do the deal. Ian
  16. If that is the case it's interesting to think how long they were left undisturbed. The coin looks to be a good grade. It might have just been left and then rediscovered several years later.
  17. I don't think I am brave enough to answer that question
  18. I have never considered myself as much of a collector, over the years I have toyed with the idea of collecting something but then thought what is the point, whatever it was it would sit in a cupboard gathering dust and being forgotten about. Coins for me are a little different, I am not collecting them so that I can show them off, its purely for my own pleasure. I enjoy a Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea and no one bothering me with my modest collection in front of me. I will pick one at random and give it a good hard looking at under a loupe. I like the way the light shine across the surface and shows of the toning or I may notice something that I missed previously. I guess what I am saying is that its something just for me and no one else and I don't have to try and convince anyone otherwise. I do get a satisfaction from buying them and looking for ones that I don't already have and of course who does not love an upgrade This forum also plays a big part in the process, I think without it I would have probably gone off the boil.
  19. Mick, To me that is a cracking coin. Enjoy it for what it it is, dipped or undipped it's still a thing of beauty. Ian
  20. They made me smile at the time ?
  21. Yes Pete, but I have got a second chance with a very nice lady? This time I intend to not be a silly boy and go through all that again. it seems so far that my only bad habit is coin collecting and having virtual conversations on a forum. she seems okay with that one?
  22. Oh lets not even talk about bad habits. I am sure my ex wife could fill a book about mine. If only I was collecting coins at that time, it might have kept me out of all sorts of compromising situations
  23. Nothing to apologies for Matt. I am aware that there is software that will do the sniping for you, I figure if someone wants it that badly then they can have it and I will get the next one. My method works for me and stops me from getting carried away with last minute panic bidding. A lesson it took me a while to learn. Like most of us on here I have probably paid too much for some coins but I have also been lucky and picked up a few gems at a good price. Its all swings and roundabouts and as long as at the end of the day I am happy with what I have bought thats the main thing
