I think that depends also on the type of coins that you have to photograph .. generally speaking scanner tends to flat the highest details of the coin and have some problems when the coins are very small and/or very dark. Also with gold coins I got bad results.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy it .. It reminds me a series of fake Italian coins

Thanks, Rob! I really appreciate it. I know to have been too vague ... I will try to look at the specifics books and papers perhaps, starting from a specific period. I have already read the recently published Medieval European Coinage vol. 8 and in fact, the problems cited above are quite evident as well as for all books of this series.

Hi all I am writing this post because I would like to ask you which are, according to your opinion, the best books on the Anglo Saxon coinage. I've recently finished the reading of a book on the history of this interesting period and I would like to deepen the knowledge of the coinage related to it. Any suggestion is welcome!

Lovely coin ! congratulations for your new acquisition
-
this is not a numismatic book but in any case, it contains several images and references to coins. I am reading it right now and I find it extremely well done despite the language is not the easiest for me.
-
The style looks quite regular to me, even if images are not perfect. From Lord Stewartby's excellent book "English Coins" at page 216 refering to pre-treaty group E : " the mis-spellings GHLORIA or GAHLORI on the quarters are less obviously explicable". So your coin could be a small variety of the coins cited above

Non Coinage Works of Benedetto Pistrucci
Matteo95 replied to Sword's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I suggest this book where you can find all the wax models by Benedetto Pistrucci that are in the collection of the Museo della Zecca di Roma. At the following link, you can read all the second volume https://www.museozecca.ipzs.it/repository/biblioteca/3/BdN_Monografia_1.II.2/mobile/index.html#p=1 In the first pages can be seen the models for the sovereign -
mintage of Tanzania proof set 1966
Matteo95 replied to Matteo95's topic in Enquiries about Non British coins
Yes I am with your opinion, even if I would like to know the source of 5500. It's he Royal Mint : ninety-seventh Annual Report of the Deputy Master and Controller for the year 1966. London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1967. those reports were published every year , this is one for ex. http://www.galata.co.uk/store.asp?storeAction=showDetail&stockID=11274 -
hi all, This morning I was checking the mintage of some proof sets produced by the RM during the last century and I noted that for the 1966 Tanzanian proof set the mintage reported on Krause and all the other references is 5500 pieces of each coin in the set, however reading the Royal Mint annual report for this year it seems that the mintage is of only 500. So, I would like to ask you if you know if those coins have been minted also in the following years with the same date or anything else... Looking on eBay I found several items which make me quite dubious about the number reported by the mint.

thank you Rob for your opinion, always interesting! When I wrote books and papers, to be honest, I was not thinking about catalogues but more one modern texts like English Coins by Stewartby, the volumes on the mint of Bury written by Robin Eaglen or the J.J. North's collection for examples and the articles that can be found on the publications like Numismatic Chronicle. In some cases, you can also discover the provenance but in others not...
-
There is also the provenance from hoard which from my point of view is probably more appealing than a coin owned by "famous collector" because it is a guarantee of authenticity and you can track the history of the coins. Of course, when there are coins with both provenances it is reasonable to consider a good premium depending on the type of the coin. Since English coins are not my primary collection I always try to buy coins with provenance. I would like instead to ask you: how much extra would you pay for coins published on books or papers?

unfortunately, the photos are too small ... About the first one, it looks like this https://www.rpcoins.co.uk/products/anglesey-1787-penny-token

Thanks, it could be and I admit that when I wrote contemporary imitation I was meaning contemporary forgery, however, due to the gothic style of the legends and the colour of the flan make me think that it couldn't be accepted at the time No, we don't have. In Italy, there is completely different legislation on m.d. finds etc.. and a tool like the PAS would be quite useless. I think that an equivalent of PAS can't be found in any other country.

Hi all! On an Italian forum, a member posted the images of this object. Clearly, it is not an authentic groat but anyway it looks old, do you know what is it? I thought that it could be a contemporary imitation or a token (or jeton)

In the viking coin the symbol made up of three triangles is the so called "Valknut" which is sometimes associated with Odin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valknut

Hi, Yes it is a farthing of Edward I mint of London, Stewartby type B
-
Hi Dave and welcome! These pence can be very difficult to identify properly, especially the first times... looking at your images I would say: London mint, class 10cf2 Matteo
-
thank you! Even if I admit that I knew yet... It is a very detailed study and yesterday I spent a couple of hours trying to classify properly my coin, however, I still haven't found the exact classification ...
