That’s very useful thanks Mike. Jerry

Penny Acquisition of the week
jelida replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Looks like F10 to me; this kind of careless die repair could easily be found on F10 though I haven’t seen it before. Jerry -
Maybe the vendor, who is a forum member, will note your interest. Jerry

No, missed that! What was it like, any link? Jerry

Shaker or Nonic pint. I already have four separate opportunities to try them out in the diary for next week, I’m going to be busy and a little unsteady. Jerry

Not so much the polished coin, but look at those nails! Surely she could have made some effort....https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/victoria-d-g-1879-coin/133717373984?hash=item1f222d3420:g:KhQAAOSwi91gbLtZ Jerry

I suspect that ‘Gentleman’s Choice’ , capitalised, refers to a named collection created by some individual who otherwise wishes to remain anonymous, a bit like the ‘North Yorkshire Moors’ collection recently sold at auction. I quite like these suggestions that might provide the inspiration when naming my own collection. https://raregoldcoins.com/blog/2016/11/18/the-top-ten-list-of-bad-coin-collection-names Jerry

Now I would normally cry ‘forgery’ regarding this gold hammered coin from an old family collection, but it has been verified by three professional numismatists so it must be OK. I would normally have some doubts about a couple of his sold coins too, but their buyers are happy so they are obviously good. Is my cynicism waning in my advancing years? Or is my liedar not correctly calibrated? Is lockdown tea-totalling not good for my health? Surely I need to be told.......... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1656-Hammered-Gold-crown-of-Commonwealth-of-England/254903874296?hash=item3b597472f8:g:cXgAAOSwt5ZgS58u Jerry

I would say that will do fine for the time being, it’s a decent German brand. Over time you will come across the various alternatives, from card envelopes up to coin cabinets, and something else might take your fancy. But you do need to find some way of recording variety, price, provenance etc with the coin, perhaps using adjacent pockets for a card coin ticket or similar. Jerry

Welcome. Plenty of attractive coins in the shilling series, but as others will also tell you, buy the best condition coins you can afford; for 20th century coins I would suggest at least EF and preferably uncirculated . Every coin has to stand on its own merits. And don’t believe what Ebay sellers tell you, learn to grade coins for yourself and be genuinely critical. Buy a copy of ‘Grading British Coins’ referenced at the top of this page and published by the forum owner. And get to a coin fair when practical, the Midland Coin Fair may be a couple of hours but a worthwhile day out and you will learn a lot. Best of luck, and don’t be afraid to post your acquisitions here. Jerry

There does seem to be a packaging error with the proof set, maybe there is some confusion due to this? https://www.royalmint.com/our-coins/ranges/annual-sets/2021-annual-coin-sets/the-2021-united-kingdom-premium-proof-coin-set/ See the note at the end of the description. Jerry

Indeed. This is the new normalcy. Jerry

The seller tells me that he has been notified of its rarity and withdrawn it for further investigation. Maybe it will reappear in a different guise? At least it doesn’t appear that he has been ripped off. Jerry
-
Sadly the coin has just been pulled, and my bid cancelled. ☹️

Don’t worry, you are forgiven! These things happen, and we move on. Jerry

The number of watchers has jumped from 2 to 8 since Martin’s post, presumably mostly forum members! Jerry

This is a really unhelpful post during an active auction when I and possibly other forum members are already bidding and watching. By tradition we do not post in a way that can affect others interests in ongoing auctions and I am most disappointed. We normally save comment until the auction is completed, and due time given for the lot to have been posted, other than in the ‘worst offerings’ scenario. Jerry

Now that is really tempting...count me in, subject to date and ‘her indoors’.... Jerry -
1953 VIP Proof set
jelida replied to secret santa's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The penny seems much more handled , centrally tarnished, than the others; I suspect it is an interloper to this set. Jerry -
Unlikely; I can’t see it, and also don’t think they would have had need for a ‘U’ punch in the first place if preparing or repairing the die. Jerry

I think that this variety was disproportionately collected from the day it was minted, in much the same way as say a Kew 50p of which there will never be many circulated examples. The LCW below the foot is quite a distinctive variety of what was already a novel new coin issue, and if spotted would likely have been put aside by those that could afford to. The vast majority of those that continued in circulation would have become indistinguishable from other varieties of the date long before the popularisation of coin collecting facilitated by easy access to literature such as the Seaby catalogue from the mid twentieth century.
