  1. Hi all. I'd very much welcome your thoughts on this one. A 1718 dump halfpenny displaying three distinct anomalies. First: No stops on the obverse. A well documented variety, but certainly scarce. Second: E over B in REX (or possibly even B instead of E). This is unrecorded in Peck, and the only reference I can find is an example listed in a St. James auction (similar grade to mine but showing some corrosion). There isn't one in the Nicholson collection. Third: The coin is on a broad flan. All my other 1717 and 1718 halfpennies are approximately 26mm in diameter. This one is 27.5mm. Have any of you seen anything similar? Thanks very much.
  2. Actually. Come to think of it. I saw them at the Glasgow Apollo in May 1976 too. So they were still playing small theatres then.
  3. True. Although the Soho coins were a huge improvement on those which came before there is often a weakness in the lettering which would have been there in the original strike, and not as a result of subsequent wear.
  4. My first two gigs were both in April 1971. T Rex and the Rolling Stones. Each about 50p. What would a front of stage stalls ticket for a Rolling Stones show cost these days? Oh, hang on. They haven't done a small theatre show in decades, have they!
  5. I made a record with Pete Burns…..
  6. I was at the John Rylands Library recently to see the St. John fragment. Beautiful building. I'll certainly make a point of going to see the coin collection next time I'm over that way. Thanks for suggesting it.
  7. Upgraded coins are always sold or exchanged. What's the point in keeping them? (Unless there's a story behind them, like my first 1926ME penny and 1949 3d, found in change when I was a schoolkid!) Chris and I have discussed this before. I too have a 1949 3d saved from pocket money in the 1960s. I wouldn't part with that. Same goes for our bun washers. The coins we all dreamt of finding in change back then would have been the 1933 1d, ED VIII 3d, 1952 2/6, 1954 1d. Sadly, this never happened , so I guess, for nostalgia's sake, I'd still choose these today.
  8. Is there such a thing? Excellent find if it is!
  9. One thing I did notice about the obverse: the rim varies in width. Odd?
  10. Tip for you : though the reverse design (not being Britannia) leaves something to be desired, you can find 1798 "cartwheel" halfpennies and farthings from The Isle of Man that use the same obverse. Reasonable prices too. Good tip Chris.
  11. Nice Arthur. A little bit of trace lustre on it too.
  12. If you don't count the rooftop at Abbey Road in 1969... Nope. I wouldn't. That was an outdoor film set. No paying audience.
  13. Hi Rob. No displaced 'S'. My original post relates to the strong and obvious extra letter 'V' which sits underneath, way below and to the left of 'V' in Tertivs. Much too far out of alignment to be a double strike. I do think the damage in the hair area must have happened later.
  14. Good question Dave. I would guess that's post mint damage? I just wondered if there is any scenario in which the doubled letters could have occurred at the same time as the damage. Looking at it, I'm equally curious about what could have caused those two dents as the letter doubling. I'm sure that's quite possible. Rob would be the bloke to answer this. Hopefully, he'll give us his opinion.
  15. Last ever Beatles show at Candlestick Park.
  16. Mmmm. The pricing is VERY optimistic indeed, isn't it. Spink quotes £150 for Fine. I think you're right in your estimate, probably even less. If you want it you could always make a cheeky offer, especially if you wait until near the end of the listing time when it becomes obvious to the seller no one is going to pay the opening price.
  17. The 1717 may be worth even a tad more than that. If you paid less than the £70 Arthur, you did well.
  18. Good question Dave. I would guess that's post mint damage?
  19. Nor did he tell you what was his favourite pizza. What kind of a man is he? Likes dates on his, apparently? Very strange! ...and a milled edge. Though given a choice he'd probably prefer a bun……. Yup, he likes to Wyon and dine...
  20. I'd say it's not a variety, but rather a die identifier...it looks to me, especially as you can also see the shadow of an 'I', that a coin got stuck in the machine and damaged the die? Or, and I don't know anything about this, do they reuse (grind off [not completely]) the old dies, as they sometimes do with hammered? Thanks for that. Very interesting, and something I'd not considered. I hadn't noticed a shadow 'I' either. Do you mean slightly angled and just to the left of the Tertivs 'I'? if it is it would probably also be in alignment with the wonky lower V'.Reaching for my loupe... Yes, there's also what looks to be a shadow of a letter, maybe V, after the S too?You could be right. I hadn't noticed that either. Hard to tell if its the shadow of a letter or simply surface wear.
  21. Variety being the spice of life . For early milled Scott and Rob are the experts here.
  22. Excellent advice for you from Stuart there, Arthur. Colin's site will provide you with lots of detailed information on all major varieties from 1760 to 1956. Colin Cooke's collection (which I gave you the link to) is a great place to learn about the earlier stuff. I'm sure you'll enjoy the forum. There are people here whose depth of knowledge is truly astonishing and who will always be happy to help and advise you on building your collection. Regardless of grade respect to you for finding a 1717 dump farthing with which to start. Most impressive!
