    Yes, that's very concerning when one of the top auction houses doesn't spot a blatant modern repro.

    The reverse has 179 teeth - the true reverse should have 156 ! And the chainmail is more like the plain trident version. And the obverse has 180 teeth vs 175 on a real one.

    Bought this from a collector in Russia - very interesting experience. Emails go through electronic interpretation smoothly and officially they are not allowed to export any coins (and maybe other objects) older than 50 years (or something like that) but it all worked pretty smoothly. He contacted me via my rare penny website.

I can't post a larger picture but could email you a high quality image. It's an 1848 Peck 1496 with unrecorded R over B in REG. I'll supply my name with the photograph.

    Yes, the rim does look very flat but everything else seems OK.

    I think it's the younger generation that are doing that - our granddaughter's student boyfriend speculates on bitcoin whereas none of my pensioner golfing friends would touch it with a bargepole !

    Plus, of course, the fact that the pandemic has seen people's bank accounts swell through lack of holidays, restaurants etc and, as the baby boomers move through their twilight years, they realise that they can't take it with them. So they may as well spend it on something that takes their fancy.
